1) Trump would go scorched earth after the primary to retaliate against DeSantis. I don't know if he'd run an independent campaign or support someone else, but he wouldn't lean back and back DeSantis.
2) Rallying around DeSantis doesn't change the problem that DeSantis is a Trump Mini-Me who would have big problems appealing to moderate republicans and independents in states not named Florida because of his views essentially being similar to Trump's except for not being an over the top lunatic.

What flies in Florida wouldn't fly in states with more moderate voters. DeSantis is going to be tied to Trump/Trumpanzeeism one way or the other; Biden wouldn't even need to film any attack ads, he can just show this one DeSantis himself filmed.
