I would say more so biased and invested in protecting certain people. Prior to the tabloid 90s, it was par for the course for the media to turn a blind eye to all kinds of wild shyt when it came to a guy they liked. Social media and technology has changed that because that barrier is pretty much gone now. You can't hide shyt like you used to so media people actually have to address stuff that they used to be able to avoid.
