The fact that this thread got to two pages without someone making the obligatory crack on how fukking ugly he is disturbs me.

You should be ashamed of yourselves.

I was talking with my folks one day about blacks in hockey. It boggles my mind that someone as talented as PK plays defence. With his puck handling skill set and size, dude should be a power forward like Brendan Shanahan or Cam Neely

My question is, did PK really love defence coming up, or was he kind of pushed into the position by coaches?

I know where you going with this, but on some teams you'll play alot more if you choose to play defense because everybody wants to play forward/center...

Black hockey players in the NHL have been around for years.
In Canada and places in the US where hockey is more popular, there are a good number of black hockey players. Just like anything else, they either don't make it to the professional level or they choose another sport.

As for PK Subban playing defense, that's not a bad thing. Bobby Orr was a defenseman and Zdeno Chara is a defenseman. At higher levels of hockey, defensemen are integral in both defensive and offensive play.

that's totally not the point though, Zdeno Chara couldn't play forward

As an Habs fan, I do wonder sometimes what would happen if PK played the wing, dude has a wicked wristshot, top-tier hands and great vision, hell he could play center if he wanted to

I think he likes to play defense though.... but I'd love to see him being used on offense on some occasions ala Deion

...My question is, did PK really love defence coming up, or was he kind of pushed into the position by coaches?
He's 6 feet tall. He was probably groomed to play defense due to size and it worked out. You can be a tall center or winger. Eric Lindros was tall too. Size does matter for defensemen position.
If you look at it in terms of football, there are a bunch of different offensive and defensive positions but all are important positions. If you make it to the NFL, were you really pushed into the position by coaches or groomed to excel where coaches thought the position was best suited to your talents?
So, when you look at that way, defense may have been where coaches put him. He may have played forward but chose defense. The fact that he's making tons of money playing a game makes the question kind of moot. Yes, he may be able to play winger or center but if he's better at defense where he's more talented, experienced and useful, then great.

At the NHL level, all players have good hands, speed, and power.
He could play center. He could play wing.

I don't know what you mean by "being used on offense". Defensemen are used on offensive plays all the time. I don't think you understand the game.

its only a matter of time b4 we take over hockey

golf and tennis got that work first

nascar
and hockey next up
Tennis? There's only been a small number of black male professional players who excelled, and one was from France, not the US. You have Venus and Serena Williams for female players. That's it.

Golf? Who other than Tiger Woods is out there? It's a sea of white folks and a couple Koreans.

There are not enough grassroots programs compared to baseball, basketball and football where there are a lot of black youth getting the opportunity to play hockey. There's no imminent takeover. Just look at the youth hockey population now. It's only a bit better than say the eighties.
