Would you say he was a bigger star than Austin was in the 90s?

Speaking as a 90s baby, I remember Austin being EVERYWHERE growing up, and I swear there's no way anyone in wrestling was ever as big of a star as he was in the mainstream media. You didn't even have to watch wrestling to know who Stone Cold was and according to Vince no one has ever made him more money than Stone Cold.

Hogan. Hogan and savage were a bigger draw than rock and austin at their peak. You can drop any matrice you want but savage vs honky tonk and hogan vs andre on nbc drew 33 million people (15 rating) on A FRIDAY.

33 million

Hogan was a pop culture icon on the level or higher than any athlete in the world, he was on magic johnson / larry bird status... and nobody would say austin was on jordan level in 97/98

Now that is a debate, who was a bigger draw in their peak? Macho or The Rock?

I have to look more into it

Thats a real debate, i agree. Both are popculture icons in their peak AND after, and have tier zero mic kills and charisma. There is a reason they are 1 and 3 favorite wrestlers of mine ever

In terms of this question, I would say Hogan. Just because you would add in the little kids, where I would think kids wouldn't get Austin entirely; bright colors and larger than life personas get them hooked.

If you were to put up a graph of the popularity over time, Hogan would have the bigger hill, but have a steeper drop more than Austin's, so Austin would be more popular right now; this was before Hogan's sex tape and racist rant, he was already going down because when keyfabe broke, word about Hogan's true self destroyed his image.

I started watching wrestling towards the end of Hulkamania (mid to late 1991/early 1992) so I don't the full impact but the brief time I saw him compared to seeing Austin's rise in 1996-1997 and his peak in 1998-1999 Hogan was definitely bigger. If you mention pro wrestling to the average person they're going to think of Hogan. Without him wrestling would have never gone mainstream. Because of Hogan we got Austin, The Rock, Cena, etc.

Hogan... maybe it's nostalgia but I think if you ask a non wrestling fan the first name that comes to mind when they think wrestling they'll say Hogan. For better or worse he is the babe Ruth or Michael Jordan of wrestling

I think that's Ric Flair now honestly :yeshrug:

And you could say because of Austin there is still a WWE around :manny:

That's just a rating for the kayfabe era...the WWF was watched more people worldwide in 1999 on a international basis. They were astronomical at the time...can always make Double Talk Dave give it up. But a NBC network number vs Cable tv is a silly thing to compare.

Hogan is bigger in wrestling but no star is bigger than the Rock from this industry. Hogan's peak has never and never did touch the reach the Rock was at in 2000. Rock outdrew Austin as a heel in 99. So that's a joke.

My mom still talks about how I would beg her to buy me Stone Cold Steve Austin toys for christmas, I had the shirt, I got that shytty Warzone game because he was on the cover, I got in trouble too many times for flipping adults off, and I frequently ended sentences with "And thats the bottom line"

Austin was like god when I was a kid lol
