Any political issues you've just straight up changed your mind about at some point in your life?

Mine have always been pretty static, but I'd say I view nuclear energy much more positively than I used to. Especially in the context of worsening climate change. Other than that my base opinions are mostly the same as always, but I have gotten a lot more cynical about the idea that poor/working-class people will ever ignore culture war issues and vote in their economic self-interest. Back in 2016 when I was a fairly big Bernie supporter I thought that, but Trump sort of disabused me of that notion.

It’s been more about becoming more realistic

The idea that capitalism will someone be replaced or you will ever have the votes to completely overhaul the medical system or have terms limits in congress seems like a waste of time to pretend like those things could happen

You need to win elections 1st and foremost and keep republicans from holding office

Nuclear Energy and Rent Control are two that come to mind for me... I'm sure there are others

i cant think of any single issue but 20 years ago i was wavering between centrism and apathy. now i am solidly left.

i guess i could pick one thing, i am a lot more skeptical of gun control now than i was in the past. restricting the worker's guns while increasing police budgets and allowing mercenaries to work domestically at protests doesnt sit right with me.

Moved from the political compass' green quadrant to the gold quadrant.

Became more pro gun in the wake of Trump and the rise of neo fascism.

Became less pro LGBT in the wake of TRAs bullying women.

Become more pro American after doing some digging and finding deep ADOS roots on both sides of my family.

Become more anti Communist after hanging out with a lot of Bay Area leftists. They're batshyt insane.

Still anti authoritarian.
Still anti white supremacist.

The abortion issue. I'm still pro-choice because idgaf, but I think there are valid points on each side. I don't think there's always a "right" answer.

I moved gradually from being fascinated with military narratives and nearly enlisting in the Army Reserves out of high school to help pay for college (actually met with recruiters in my home twice), to deciding most of our military actions were bad, to deciding that our military moves were almost universally wrong but theoretically right actions could exist, to just becoming anti-war across the board.

My entire adult life (besides when I paid for school) I'd been against getting into debt and recommended that people not do it. And I've always had problems with exploitation in our economic system. But it wasn't until the last 7-8 years that I fully realized how much a debt-based financial system and capitalism in general are at the root of most of our biggest problems and the world is fukked if we don't replace them soon.

Reparations was always a theoretically good idea, but until I read The Case For Reparations I didn't really believe it was possible and we could fight for it.

I went from being completely pro-abortion with no qualifiers, to being completely anti-abortion with few qualifiers, to coming to believe the issue is extremely complex and difficult to be black-and-white about. I'm still personally against getting abortions but I don't think all abortion is the same morally as murder and I understand the arguments for both sides when it comes to legal status.

I had my "power to the people!" phase in my freshman and sophomore college years, but quickly learned that "the people" aren't ready to have power or wield it effectively and for the common good. Reading 1984 and Animal Farm helped me with that, because I saw with my own eyes, from student government to the presidency, how "all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" and how yesterday's revolutionaries and freedom fighters become today's autocrats.

Socialism and Communism are pipe dreams, because they fail to take human nature into account. We want to accumulate the most resources to ensure our survival. I don't think that makes us inherently bad. At the same time I don't think capitalism is the answer to everything, and it certainly has its faults.

Our bipartisan system sucks ass, because I hate having to choose between fascist white nationalists and leftist thought police alphabet soup 38 genders. But that's where we are.

Basically this.

+ Anti-big spending/MMT thinking after living in California & seeing how inflation has played out recently. Theoretically I'm fine with it, but the administration & accountability tends to be poor when dealing w/ contractors or just blankly cutting checks. The rich & connected find a way to get an unfair share of the $ and it can hurt the poor.

Min wage - generally support fed $15/hr with some provisions for SMB retail and food operations, def felt that number was too high when first bandied about in the early 10's

Less supportive of LGBT issues as I feel more of their fringe issues are being pushed (that undermine women) vs universal issues (hate crimes, marriage)

Isolationist views have gotten stronger - i wish America would stop trying to police the world, providing military protection/support to allies who don't invest their own GDP into it, intervening in civil disputes, sending billion dollar aid packages abroad while ignoring domestic issues

Overall, I've always been apathetic to our political system because it is not set up to and never was about supporting and empowering the common person, and most certainly not black people. in fact no great civilization since the beginning of [recorded] civilization was ever set up equitably, there was always a ruling class, clergy/nobility class, professional class, and peasants/the poor...this isn't going to change. right on to the people who think it will, but i think i've grown turned off by this segment's idealism and preachiness. i deal in pragmatism and the pragmatic choice is not to work myself into a heart attack over every fukking thing i can't control. personal happiness and enjoying "my tribe" as outlined in the other thread is my day to day concern.
