Going old school with it but Elgin Baylor. Made the Finals 8 times with the Lakers and lost every single time, he then retired 9 games into the 1971-72 season because of injuries. The Lakers proceeded to go on the longest winning streak in NBA history and won the title.

They ended up giving him a ring for that year out of sympathy :mjcry:
I came in to post this. I know that ether had to be running through Elgin's veins even when he was running the Clip Show.

FWIW, I also found it somewhat funny that Miami won their back-to-back titles after Bibby and Ilgauskas left when they were basically just hitching a ride for that title in that first season.

Yeah man that had to be sad. Elgin was one of the faces of the league and had to retire because of bad knees.
