Close toe shoes for formal events. This is back when awards were something special and EVERYBODY dressed up for awards.

Another key to all this is this was when Black radio and TV had the most variety. Video Soul would play Patti Labelle followed by MC Hammer followed by Luther Vandross followed by Guy. Nowadays all you hear is one kind of music per station/channel.
