But seriously if you cash a check somewhere other than a bank do they charge a fee per euros (that's what's it's call right?) or is it a flat fee?

We use pounds. As for fees, it depends where you go. Most places like The Money Shop implement a small charge depending on the amount you cash - if it's under £100 you might not get a charge. I haven't dealt with cheques for years though.
