Didn't see this yesterday:
@I.V. i need your thoughts on the young knicks breh
I'll start with the BIG caveat that it's Summer League... so I don't want to get into sweeping generalizations, because that's not fair. But this is what I've seen so far:
Porzingis: 7'3" Larry Bird :ohnonono:
Nah, seriously - He has crazy length, and good feet. He runs the floor really well, and he has much better defensive know-how than expected, especially when it comes to staying vertical on defense. His jumper looks pretty smooth from distance, too. He should be shooting the ball 10-15 times a game right now. His hands look a little shaky, but I think that has to do with how weak his frame is right now, minor contact dislodges him from position, and basically makes it hard to corral, now... as time goes, he may get a few of those calls, which will be another way for him to draw fouls. He's also shown that he has some vision, making smart passes on the break, and out of the high and low post.
I also love that he's out there fighting. Okafor bullied him early yesterday... and he turned around in the second half, made his own adjustment, and basically gave Okafizer fits. My obvious concern is that at 7'3... sweet jesus, I'm just worried about his body surviving and staying healthy. But this dude is a talented basketball player, who's pretty well rounded for being 19 and from fukking Latvia.
Jerian Grant: A strong, quick guard... who makes decisive moves to get into the paint and has a great feel for the open court. Also has flashed an impressive pull-up jumper. (shoots better on the pull-up than he does from a set shot right now) I have some concerns about how he'll run a half-court offense... he doesn't quite have the timing down on entry passes right now, a lot of hesitation there. But I like what I've seen, he's also been aggressive on defense, getting deflections and steals, but not leaving himself way out of the play by cheating. I mean, to get him for Tim Hardaway Jr. straight up... it's a goddamned miracle.
Thanassis: I think we should have him on the roster, because you can always find minutes for a guy who is THAT disruptive on defense. But he's definitely out of control. His offense is still mainly a mess, though he's very good at slashing to the basket. He feels like Eric Bledsoe... if Eric Bledsoe was less skilled and constantly on methamphetamines. I think he deserves a roster spot, because he could have taken WAY more money overseas, and played NBDL as a favor to Phil/the Knicks. But i'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed at the lack of offensive development over the last year.
Cleanthony Early: Classic case of "I wish this guy was 2 inches taller" -- He seems way more composed than I've seen him in the past, be it summer league games or nbdl or even college. He obviously has a lot of confidence in that jumper, which I'm not sure is well placed, but whatever. I think, more than anything... I wish he had like A SKILL to hang his hat on. But he's been quietly efficient (for summer league) runs the floor really well, finishes when given the chance, he's not trying to do too much with his ballhandling, which I think he's recognized is something he's had to both work on, AND do less in games. He's been in the right places on defense, though I don't think I'd consider him a good defender. I think he's alright. If he plays in the NBA, he's a 4-8 minute a game backup wing. There's no shame in that.
Who else do you want to hear about Ndour? Kirk? Labeyrie? Galloway? I'd like to see Galdikas play! I have a little bit of time today... I can give a few breakdowns... maybe even with some video(?)
