I've given my backdrop before, years ago on here, but I'll give it again...
The first team I ever loved was the Titans, since '99 and still riding with em. But the second team I ever loved? The Raiders, because I was a Charles Woodson Stan, and he's still my favorite athlete ever...
I came up in Sacramento, which was 50/50, Raiders/49ers fans. My pops loved the Niners, so I hated em, naturally gravitated to the Raiders. I never loved em more than the Titans, who I just loved the colors and players more. But the days of the Raiders with Woodson and Allen as bookend corners, Napoleon Kaufman, Rich Gannon, those were my Raider days...
My fandom with the Raiders faded when I became a Skins fan and pretty much left completely when Woodson left, so I haven't considered myself a "Raiders fan" in many years. But as far as (formerly) local teams go, they are who I root for, I do keep light tabs on em and like to see em do well...
Because of my emotional history with them they are kinda my "secondary" AFC team, I still like em. Kinda like how living in NC has made me a fairweather Panthers fan in the NFC. They aren't really my team, but I like em and want to see them succeed, follow them lightly...
So you add that with, I'm a Pete Carroll Stan, and without question my favorite team I ever saw on NFL history, was LOB-era Seattle Seahawks. I think Pete is a phenomenal coach, he really isn't discussed as one of the 20 best coaches ever, but he should be. This is only a 3-4 year deal, he's old and he's not gonna be there long...
This is straight up about restoring credibility and respectability to the Raiders brand, and I think he will. They won't win a Super Bowl and probably won't even come close, but by the time he leaves they'll be a playoff team and he'll have a hand in who his successor is, to carry them to the next level...
I've never seen a division this stacked at head coach. A few things are about to happen that are in his favor though:
•the Chiefs dynasty has a maximum of 1 year left on it, if it continues thru 2025. The longest dynasties in NFL history, from first to last title run, lasted 7 years. 2025 would make 7, and that's if it lasts that long. The Chiefs won't ever suck while Mahomes and Reid are there but there's about to be an imminent regression to the field, which bodes well for all the other teams;
•7 teams get into the playoffs, which favors a rebuilding team. Denver just made it and wouldn't have made it in the old NFL playoff structure;
•the other two coaches aren't locks. Sean Payton was known as Mr 8-8 for years and his team was notorious for blowing several big playoff games in New Orleans. Harbaugh is a great coach, but incidentally, he's the only coach in this division who has never won a Super Bowl...
Once the Chiefs start regressing towards the mean, this division is wide open. Why not the Raiders?
Pete's biggest weakness is the inability to build a consistently functional offensive line, which is tied to his OC hires. He's GOT to get some assistance in finding a solid OC, it's not a strong suit for him...
But establishing a consistent roster that is competitive? That's a lock. They'll win more than 4 games in 2025, bet it up...
Go Raiders!
