The DOT should fine carriers for chronically delayed and canceled flights.
You said it wouldn't do anything.
Pete shouldn't be criticized for making sure passengers know their rights.
Pete hasn't done anything.
Those fines won't address the underlying issues causing flight delays which is a shortage due to the nearly 50k workers who left during covid.
The entire point of this thread is that there is a staffing issue. IT was in the articles, tweets etc. That is what everyone is angry about. I had a flight canceled last month because of a staffing issue.

The other funny thing is fines were a suggestion of what Buttigieg could do, and not the only option. He has powers to do something and so far has sat on his hands and is talking about anything but that. No one is mad at you, you are irrelevant. People are critical of Buttigieg's inaction, which I am glad you have finally mentioned is an issue after many of us have told you THAT is the issue.

A few key points highlighted by the biggest pilot union in the world:

This was all literally in the American Prospect articles that @FAH1223 linked. We all know it's an airline-created staffing shortage due to them pocketing the bailout money. I am not sure why this has to be re-emphasized as if we didn't already discuss this.

The Biden Administration has to do something about this to make this right because it is fukking up peoples travel. I know private jet flyers like @CrimsonTider don't care, but a lot of us that depend on commercial flights are bothered.

Dude is out of his league. I get he was a gay democratic mayor in a red state, but he never should have been put on the pedestal that he was put on. Honestly should have gone back to Indiana after the election and use the notoriety to run for senate in Indiana since one of their senators is on the ballot this year.

The point was that it was a statement from the pilot's union itself with more specifics.

The article cited the pilots union with numbers for how many pilots are available to hire.

Also, there are pilots available:

But it’s not at all clear that there are true shortages. The airlines make more money with overly lean staffing, and this “shortage” is mostly about maximizing profits. According to FAA data assembled by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), over the last eight and a half years 54,533 new pilots received FAA certification, while during the same time, the largest mainline and cargo carriers hired 36,951 pilots to cover expansion, pilot attrition, and to replace the 15,000 pilots who have retired since 2013.

So there is actually a surplus of certified pilots. As ALPA also points out, there may not be enough pilots at salaries the big airlines are willing to pay, kind of like Amazon being short of warehouse workers at going wages.

The airlines aren’t hiring people.

That was never his plan, he wanted to get the hell out of CACdiana and run for Prez someday

And the argument you're so upset with is that finies isn't going to increase the number of pilots.

You've said nothing to explain why a mechanism put into place to counter tarmac delays is going to lead to an influx of hired and trained pilots in the short term. But it could lead to airlines offering less flights and less overbooking which is what it was primarily intended to.

Considering the largest fine ever given out by the faa for the rules cited is 1.76 million I don't even see it making a dent in the 54bn received by airlines.

No, I’m upset that Buttigieg and the Biden administration are burying their heads in the sand while this is happening. Fines may be a solution, but I just want to punish bad business practices.

This should go into the Pressure Deliberate Obfuscation. Textbook move.

I am asking Buttigieg to do address an issue the airlines have created within the power of his position. It could be fines, I have no idea. It could also be him going on TV shows and calling out these airline companies for what they are doing with pilot staffing to get the public on his side. Idk, but anything more.

Right now he ain’t doing shyt which is why everyone is angry about these delays.

Ive said this a few times in this thread and that’s what the articles in the first post is asking for him to do.
