I had to stop the defensive high wizard vid @ 1:50 :merchant: :wtf: bein born in '89 I didn't get to experience his wizardry like wit RiGAWD currently :mjcry:

I remember watching his fights as a youngin with my uncle and I couldn't really appreciate the shyt he was doing at the time. I remember just looking at the screen like " :dwillhuh: is this nikka from the future? "

I think I remember Roy talking about how certain fighters almost see their opponent in slow motion. He said its like slowed down because you can make your opponent do exactly what you want them to do.

If you look at why Pernell was so successful defensively, he often has his feet/trunk/heads in different planes/dimensions. Often with his head two removed from his lead foot. Floyd and Rigo are really good at this as well--although they tend to operate in two planes whereas pernell would in 3. Planes--when boxers train with the ropes setup in the ring to duck under/over.

You can study him all you want, but what he did came from nowhere but his own mind. You can't teach someone to be elusive in the way he was. He slithered out of reach while standing right there to be hit. He just had an amazing gift. Parnell made defense exciting. You can't teach that.

You can teach defense, you cant transfer his talent is what you mean.

How do you even train for the mental aspect of that?

Someone appearing so hittable but is that crafty at making you miss by inches has to do a number on your confidence and psyche. There aren't a lot of folks you can bring in that move like that.

Seems like something you'd have had to get out there and feel out but you're pro'ally gonna be down 6 rounds before you start to get a feel for his timing :heh:

Pernell Whitaker is the greatest defensive fighter I've ever seen as well. He wouldnt "block" punches...he would just make you hit air.

Just that 1 clip against ODLH (which Pea really won by the way:ufdup:, but that's another thread) is a perfect summary of Sweet Pea's defensive skill/reflexes:ohlawd:

That's a boxing clinic right there brehs

Still wish I could have seen Buddy and Pernell fight before Buddy's left shoulder got fukked up and he lost his money left hook. Still think McGirt would have lost but I bet it would have been more competitive.
I think his two fights with Buddy and his fight against Tito were the only times I vigorously rooted against Sweet Pea.

I just felt that Sweet Pea won that fight off of his defense and the fact he controlled the action (even while going backwards) the majority of the fight.

The same reason that I could see Lara thinking he beat Canelo ( except Whitaker didnt "run" the last rounds like Lara did which imo Lara gave away the fight against Canelo to me), and to lesser extents how I had Herrera beating Garcia, and even DLH beating Trindidad....Sweet Pea outlanded DLH, out threw him, and had the higher connection rate....plus he dropped DLH in the fight as well which DLH, Lara and Herrera werent able to do their opponents.

At times, he had ODLH looking stupid and frustrated in the fight, but he lost by scores of 115-111 and 116-110 twice?:dahell::comeon:

Pea never lost a fight imo until he lost to Tito Trinidad.
