From what I read he was never treated as a big deal in AAA before LU. Even in LU he started off as a midcard jobber taking a backseat to Fenix, Drago and Aerostar (this was at the start when they worked closely with AAA). But the writers of LU saw the potential that AAA didn't see, so when they introduced the storyline of his master and him breaking arms after each match he started to get over, and the rest is history.

And he was supposed to beat Del Rio at the end but that a$$hole didn't think Pentagoat deserved it.

Now he's the biggest new star in the whole game and Alberto is nearly blacklisted.

and yeah I believe Penta is too much of a star to just be half of a tag team. At least once AEW weekly TV is rolling along and they need someone to take the ball and run with it, Pentagon will be inevitably be champion at some point.
