LSU whiffed on two top targets for the coaching staff to address the center position when five-star center
Moussa Cisse signed with Memphis and Oklahoma State transfer
Yor Anei signed with SMU this week.
While Anei was a relatively new name, here are some of the behind the scenes notes on Cisse's recruitment especially, which trended away from LSU to Memphis.
*** First of all, there's no way around this, but missing on Cisse is big for LSU. A NCAA Tournament team could have become a Final Four type of team with the potential lottery pick in the fold. Couple his shot blocking and size with a talented front court of some of LSU's returning players and new additions, it would have been something. With where LSU stood for Cisse, there's no doubt it's a tough pill to swallow that
Will Wade & Co. couldn't close.
*** Going back through the recruitment all the way back to March, things started to trend towards LSU for Cisse. Here's what we wrote in March after LSU picked up its first 247Sports Crystal Ball pick. Geaux247 waited to put one in as COVID-19 hit and turned the school side of things upside down a bit.
"To cap things off, LSU is a serious contender for five-star big man
Moussa Cisse, who could reclassify to 2020, if his classwork is in order,"
our tidbits read. "If the 6-10, 220-pounder does that, LSU is the expected favorite to land him. LSU picked up a 247Sports Crystal Ball pick on Monday while Memphis holds three picks."
Sure enough, when Cisse reclassified at the end of May, we let the picks fly. He was expected to announce in early June, and it was going to be LSU. That's from folks on Cisse's side of things and on the LSU side.
ESPN analyst dikk Vitale then dropped a tweet suggesting a Notice of Allegations was expected to hit LSU later in the month. With that and the social unrest in the country, Cisse pushed things back, but it's clear a leak went against LSU in this case.
As June rolled along and Cisse didn't make a decision, we checked in on his recruitment and things were still in LSU's favor. Now, Memphis naturally carried a lot of confidence with his recruitment. Local prospect, Penny Hardaway, recruiting success, etc., but we still heard LSU was the expected pick.
Fast forward again and another Vitale tweeted pushed the timeline of an NOA out to late July or even August. From there, the tides shifted and Cisse ultimately inked with Memphis and LSU was left at the alter.
In recruiting, you never count a prospect as "done" until they sign and Cisse is a prime example of that. This is a recruitment LSU should have won when it had the momentum, but for some of the reasons above and others, Wade & Co. lost its footing and Cisse is staying in Memphis.
With LSU fading late in the game for Cisse, Wade turned up the heat on the best available big man transfer in the country,
Yor Anei, one of the top shot blockers in the nation. Houston held an early lead for Anei, but SMU ultimately prioritized him right away and kept pushing, leading to his commitment to the program.
While the staff was pushing for Anei as things looked grim for Anei, SMU landed his pledge on Tuesday afternoon. In the end, Anei wasn't that close to coming to LSU. Maybe it was the staff shifting gears from Cisse to him late, but Anei landed at SMU where he'll play a ton of minutes over the next two seasons.
LSU is now onto the waiting game for the NBA Draft, which could be kind to the Tigers and give them plenty of key talent back, or be as cruel as the summer of Cisse was. This year has proven to be unpredictable, but Wade and his staff will turn over plenty of stones to make sure the roster is ready for another NCAA Tournament bid and run.
