this doesn't have any of the vibes of the other Penny Dreadful show. The old england setting was part of what made that show so good. this shyt look silly.
Anybody? ep2?
I'm willing to give it 4 episodes.
It's not Penny Dreadful. It looks like they're trying to spin it as the scariest monster is man himself.
Natalie Dormer, while she shines, only seems to serve as a trickster. The story would work without her.
I liked the pilot but I don't think it's going to blow anybody away. Just seems like any LA Noir film.
The lore and the familiarity isn't there, going into the show, which was one of the fun things about the OG.
C+
OH! and now they're bringing in a whole "Murder Incorporated"/1940's Crime Syndicate angle, with reference to Meyer Lansky and everything.I think I would like the show more if they didn't attach the name "Penny Dreadful" to it. As I was watching the latest episode, I was thinking:
In this version of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", Toontown is full of Mexicans in Zoot Suits.
They have the whole conspiracy to tear down the "ethnic" 'hood and replace it with the highway and everything.
It's kind of a really weird show, I can't really categorize it to be honest. It's set in what would be the stereotypical "Noir" setting from Roger Rabbit/Chinatown/LA Confidential/etc., but its not a totally "Noir" story. The idea of a trickster character working with different factions in order to get them to all kill each other and cause maximum chaos reminds me of something like "A Fistfull of dollars" or even the bad guy from "Wonder Woman". Plus for some reason there are Nazis trying to take over and some kind of weird Scientology-style cult.
Actually, as I'm writing this out I think I might be starting to get it.
They're using "Penny Dreadful" to refer to cheap novels in general, kind of like a stand in for the term "Pulp Fiction".
Cheap detective stories are one type of pulp fiction, so are cheap "Nazi spy" conspiracy stories, and cheap "West Side Story" gangster romance ripoffs, and "true crime" stories about cults, etc. It's meant to be something like a bunch of "airport newsstand" books mashed together, I guess.
i really like the series so far but where’s the supernatural and the beings
i hope its not just santa muerte and the other lady, they haven’t even said who she is. is she the devil, a demon or what. i hope we start seeing some shyt soon
Eva Green is a hard act to follow
