I looked at is 48/2*12 and both 2 and 12 are in the denominator and the fraction as a whole is 48/24.

As opposed to 48/2 as a fraction and 12 as a whole number multiplied by the whole thing.

Yeah but why?

Yeah but why?

dunno, no real reason. i just proceeded to move from right to left because i was already on that side. Honestly, it depends on how its written.

But you and @-DMP- are doing it wrong. You always multiply or divide from left to right ... depending on which comes first. Then you would add/subtract from left to right in the same manner.

you're right, thats why i said its ultimately how it is written ( i envisioned the parentheses being outside the denominator) . The calculator is a little ambiguous but you are right. after you do the parentheses you go back to left from right.

Multiplication and division are the same precedence but because we move left from right, you do division first.

The Deep State
doing the multiplication before the division.

48/2(9+3)
48/2(12)
48/24=2
Gotta do the parentheses first.

Thats the problem.

You can't tell if the division sign applies to the term in the parentheses or not in addition to the 2.

AS STATED, the answer is 288.

48 / 2 x (9+3)

48 / 2 x 12

24 x 12

288

See, I was taught that division and multiplication are ... equal so to speak, so you always go from left to right:

48 / 2 (9+3) =
48 / 2 (12) =
24 (12) =
288.

I don't know why you multiplied before you divided.

It basically depends if you assume (9+3) is part of the numerator, or part of the denominator of the fraction 48/2. It's really dumb. As long as you specify with parentheses, you're in the clear.

This just shows why its important that you actually understand PEMDAS & basic order of operations. You shouldn't automatically accept a calculators answer as correct, it should match a general answer you already have

I can answer this. Whenever you have something like 48/2(9+3) you NEVER assume that the (9+3) is in the denominator. At least from the convention I have seen mathematics written, and from the order of operations calculators use. You always assume 48/2 is multiplied by (9+3). The only way you can say the (9+3) is on the denominator is if it explicitly says so like in 48/[2(9+3)].

So using that logic you get the same answer whether you multiply 48 times 12 then divide by 2, or if you divide 48 by 2 then multiply by twelve.
