As noted by The Times' Mike Bresnahan, the Lakers are "debating whether to not to bring Pau Gasol off the bench when he returns from knee tendinitis."

There's no question the team's forward/center and former All-Star has struggled to fit alongside Dwight Howard. Gasol has admitted multiple times that he's more comfortable closer to the basket, but that's where the Lakers have Howard positioned.

Gasol does need to play stretches at center. That's where he'll flourish but coming off the bench doesn't achieve that.

Howard has averaged 36.1 minutes a game this season. If Coach Mike D'Antoni trimmed that down to 33, that still leaves only15 minutes for Gasol at center without Howard.

Whether Gasol is starting or coming off the bench, that math doesn't change. If he also plays 33 minutes a game, that leaves 18 minutes to play alongside Howard.

If Gasol belongs on this Lakers' roster, he and Howard need to be productive on the floor together. If not, the team needs to trade him.

The stigma of a benching isn't the way to help rebuild Gasol's confidence. It made sense for Lamar Odom, but then he was playing behind Andrew Bynum and Gasol.

Antawn Jamison may be a better fit next to Howard
, but D'Antoni can juggle the rotation to accomplish that. If it's Jamison closing games based on matchup, then so be it.

Gasol is still one of the most-skilled bigs in the league. He deserves better than a benching, especially when it's just not necessary.

Jamison over Gasol :scusthov:

So disrespectful :smh:

Should have hired P-jax.

Dont understand how the Front Office can hire D'antoni when his whole system depends on a 39yr old player.

:manny: If we can't trade him, I like the idea. Bring him in for Jamison, let him play a few minutes with Dwight, then move him to center. Hopefully he could anchor the bench. The problem is even with Dwight out, he still wanders from the paint.

If Pau comes off the bench then it's a wrap for him. His confidence is already shaken and a benching would finish him off mentally. I think he should just be traded if the Lakers can't make it work.

This. D'Antoni leaves Dwight in late games so he can brick free throws costing them games because he is trying to build up his confidence yet your second most reliable scoring option you have no problems dismantling what little faith Pau has left in his game? Idiotic.

Phil Jackson is :flabbynsick: It's amazing that getting stood up by the Lakers on prom night is actually adding to the undeserved praise this old fakkit gets. These Lakers would look just as :scusthov: with him out there coaching. It's like people already forgot that he got swept badly with a team that was supposed to go 73-9 a few years ago.

Nash is signed for 2 more years. That decision was dumb as hell, they didn't hire Phil partly because they didn't know how long he would stay. They didn't need him to commit to 4 years because they are trying to win now. What is weird is it really seems like their building around Nash more than anybody else just because he has 2 more years on his contract.

The Lakers have a lot more empty possessions when hack a Dwight is not going on, and they're going to give up a lot more points on the other side without Dwight there to bail out all of their roaming backcourt players. Taking out Dwight is going to hurt them offensively and defensively in most cases.

The only time it makes any sense to take Dwight out is if the other teams pulls out the hack a dwight when the Lakers are down 10 and need to desperately play catch up with 3 pointers.

Defense is still bad without Pau, you can't blame him for that.

Lakers losing perimeter defenders the past couple years has hurt more than anything
