Tipping is a strategy used by the employer to get the employees mad at the customers instead of mad at the employer under-paying them. Tipping is extra; therefore, it should NOT be expected. If these waiters/waitresses want more money they should find a different career path. Or instead, change the ruling and make the employer pay them more money per hour and rid the system of tips. The employer does this to gain more money and make the employees dependent on extra tips in which are now seen as the norm because folks are ignorant.

Countries where its customary waiters get a higher salary and dont warrant tips are rated as having much worse service than places where the pay is small but its made up in tips.

And with that i ask, would you prefer your food cost more and you get worse service or do you like only paying for good service when you receive it?

If I owned a restaurant I would choose to pay my servers better and market that tips arent allowed if it mad sense budget wise. Figuring out the right wage would be a challenge but doable

Its printed on the menu and sometimes there is a sign near the hostess. At this point everyone over 21 should know if you have a large group that gratuity is included. Its like that EVERYWHERE. They do that because when you have large groups a couple of the people will not leave anything at all and just think that the tips the other people are leaving cover it. Then the waiter ends up getting an 8% tip.

when i was in high school i hated going to a fridays/applebees with a bunch of people. these cheap fukks would give the EXACT amount and not even think about giving a dollar or two.

always had to argue with em to tip, the usual response was "well i only have enough money to pay for the meal." as if this was a new practice or something. if you cant afford to give a dollar or two, then why the fukk did you come out to eat? 20 mins later these cheap fukks would be buying a 4 loko with some money they just suddenly "found"

18% gratuity for large parties is in the norm. As someone else said, they make it known to patrons, usually on the menu itself, what it is for however many people.
