A Wisconsin couple is headed either to jail or the US Supreme Court after a state court uphold their homicide convictions in the faith-healing death of their daughter, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Dale and Leilani Neumann prayed over 11-year-old Madeline instead of calling a doctor as she died from easily treatable complications of diabetes in 2008. They were convicted of reckless homicide the following year, but their 180-day jail sentences were put on hold as they appealed. The state Supreme Court sided against them this morning, leaving the highest court in the land as their only remaining legal option. It's unclear whether they will appeal.

Their attorney argued they should be shielded from penalty because parents who choose spiritual treatment for their kids can't be charged with child abuse, reports AP. Prosecutors said that's true, but all bets are off if the child dies.

The couple also made the case that it was impossible for them to know their daughter was on the brink of death because the symptoms were vague. Yes, and that's the whole the whole point of calling a doctor in the first place, the court concluded. "If we were to adopt the parents' reasoning, no prayer-treating parent would know what point is beyond 'a substantial risk of death' until the child actually stopped breathing and died."

Yes, they should be charged with something. You can't deliberately refuse proven treatments in favor of something unverified when it's a child in your care. This is one of those cases where either their religious beliefs (if they believed medicine is a spiritual violation) or their general judgment (that prayer would work such that medicine wasn't necessary) violate the law and general intelligence.

In case any faith healers ever read this....
God inspired doctors to create cures, ergo it's ok to give your kid some Tylenol for a headache or fever.

Fine not prison. When Dr's make mistakes in judgement that lead to death, (I.E) 200 thousand people die per year from medical mistakes, no one goes to prison.

Doctors are trained. They don't usually make mistakes this dumb, and when they do, they get prison time for it. Death is death, and deserves prison time when the offense is this ridiculous.

Preventable medical errors are the 6th biggest killer on the planet so i think you're misinformed, friend but im sure you have some clever language to talk around facts. More Dr.s kill people with preventable medical errors than christians that think praying over their sick child will heal them. Sorry plenty of Dr's are known for medical malpractice that lead to death from their negligence and just get stripped of their license, not so much jail time. That or they transfer to another state to practice medicine and escape justice. Lets be real here. This mistake by these parents is in the minority compared to the amount of Dr's whos stupidity kills friends.

I made a mistake though it was 98 thousand who die per year from these mistakes which cost close to 30 billion dollars. I think you need to hit the books again, friend. :smugdraper: Obviously training means nothing.

98 thousand people die from preventable medical errors. I believe religious friends who pray are the least of our worries. You have to worry about what a Dr is injecting into your body or telling you to ingest to relieve a preventable issue. Please stop the sensationalizing. Its not what men do. But let me show you what my pen do, it helps me type thoughts :gladbron:
