I lived in Pakistan until the age of 13. I grew up playing cricket on the streets and even when I moved to a nice neighbourhood, we used to play all the time. We used to get up at 6 am on weekends and walk 10 minutes by ourselves to go play cricket and my parents wouldn't give a damn.
These days, I never see kids playing outside in the nicer neighbourhoods. Our lane used to be full of kids in the evening and there would be 5 games going on, but I've noticed hardly any, except for Sunday afternoon and that's usually the kids of domestic staff (cooks, drivers) or kids working in the market.
Granted, the security situation in Pakistan has become much worse, but I find it odd, because it's the same in safer neighbourhoods with their own security. It's definitely a mix of internet/video games, parental paranoia and the rise of structured/scheduled parenting among the middle and upper-middle class (soccer practice, piano lessons, extra reading leaving limited free time, which the kids consume with internet/games/social media etc).
