I remember a couple of times when I was about to leave nyc I went to Riverbank in the morning right when it opened and it being empty as fukk. I remember being a young kid going down there through Riverside drive on our bikes in the morning and a whole bunch of kids being there right from the start. Hell even in my teen years there were always kids in J Hood Park, Riverside, and even Highbridge. Even in Union City, NJ you had kids playing really early in a neighborhood that wasn't necessarily "safe", but parents still let the kids play outside.

I am posting this because this is something that has been bothering me for a couple of years and it appears that I am not alone with this observation. Where the fukk are all the kids? Is it "overparenting"?, Video Games? Parents working 2 jobs? A combination of it all? What is it brehs? Parents in the Coli, please shed some light here. I have linked some yahoo answers and a story about a family being harassed because the kids were playing outside on a saturday afternoon :comeon:

Check this story out, just happened last week.

I started searching yahoo answers and it appears that I am not alone here

Those who grew up in nyc might want to see this video too. Check out the trailer:

I am going to continue looking into this, this shyt is bothering me.

yeah it's an interesting trend

I think beyond the general crime issue, the media hype about pedophiles etc also has skewed people's perceptions

alot of neighborhoods especially suburban ones are like ghost towns. I think instead of getting on your bike and meeting your friends around the way or just walking to over to your friends house, parents are now setting up things called "play dates" where i guess the parents can closely supervise the kids while they play.

Now who else wanna fukk with Hollywood Court?
Me and my friends rode our bikes from 183rd and broadway all the way up to Gorton High school in Yonkers when we were 12.

That's why these kids are so soft today, they never had to dodge weird creepy old dudes on their own, or learn how to ride 10 miles home with a busted up knee.

My kids love to go oustide. Granted they are only 7 and 2 and haven't realy gotten into video games, social media yet. But I hope they continue their love for the outdoors. My daughter is in to soccer now so we spend alot of time outside kicking balls, I hope it realy catches on and it's something she does for life.

I remember when I was a kid we played in the school yard all day long we didn't tell anyone we just went. We never had play dates you would just show up at their house and knock on the door. I'm seeing more and more kids not allowed to play outside anymore by themselves yet we did it all the time. And it's funny it started when GenX became parents. They grew up in the 70's and 80's when crime was much higher and they made it through ok. A lot of them grew up in big cities and survived. The in turn moved to the burbs we're it's much safer yet became incredibly overprotective of their children. Your hear more and more that parents that allow their children to play outside alone are horrible parents yet I did it all the time and I think I had great parents.

I been noticing this for a long time now. It started when I had 2 bags of Halloween candy left over and I was like where the hell all the kids go?

Not a parent, but this is disturbing. It's the summertime and there's no noise in the parks.

After school, in the warm months like April-June and September, you always used to see kids hanging in the parks or streets playing with their bags nearby. No longer.

And NYC is safer basically all across the board. :wtf:

...i used to run around the PJ at around age 5 playing in the hospital across the street on many an occasion. As i grew up by the age of 10 i was already making 3+ mile bike rides. By 12 i would hope the bus and be all over this biotch (phoenix az.)

As a parent...
If my kids are outside they can go no further than the end of the drive way to our neighbors houses :hmm: ...and i'll be outside hoovering like a mofo. (ages 10,8,7)

I guess i remember all the crazy shyt i used to get into at their age...
- being chased
- jumped
- rock fights
- hunting arrow tag (i have a scar on the corner of my right eye from this  )

I think about those things and then i laugh when my kid wants to go around the block.

THey are active though and play sports plus the back yard is always open for them to run around n stuff.

That's my seed, any undue hazards that can be avoided i'm all for.

I think it's because of safety concerns. A lot of parents will not let their kids go outside unless there is an adult to supervise. With the internet and access to news 24 hours a day, people hear daily stories about abductions and predators.

I live in ny and I see kids outside all the time.
There's children and babies everywhere I feel like.

When I was a kid I played outside all the time.
I also played a number of organized sports.

I'm not a beta male like most of the limp wrists that post here though.

I see kids outside, but not like it was before. Most times i see a bunch of kids just kinda walkin around, sometimes up to no good, sometimes just chillin :yeshrug:

When i was a kid, id leave the house early like 10-11am and ride my bike all day with my friends til the streetlights came on, i'd shower, then my mom used to let me stay out by the house out front .
