Its not TERRIBLE its just when compared to the pentultimate episode its nowhere near as strong.
Also you can tell this is one of those shows that was probably pitched as a limited series but they still had to write enough into the finale to carry on in case they got picked up for a full series.
I don’t see the hate for Episode 8. I thought it was well thought out, answered some important questions and then left and created new questions for Season 2. You have to have proper ebbs and flows to build a long term story and we know Dan Fogelman wants to create a 3 season arc. A lot of times we get caught up in shows where every episode has the proper ebbs and flows but there is always something big that happens and it kills the luster of amazing storytelling (Here’s looking at you, the promise of Designated Survivor).
I think if it was a limited series, we wouldn’t have got the Billy Pace episode, which was compelling and thoughtful. It would have been rushed, we’d know exactly what they would encounter on the outside, the killer would have been the focus of the big reveal, and we wouldn’t have had to be subjected to so much of the inner workings of Paradise (which I feel is going to come back into play in the future).
I know some people are underwhelmed by the librarian being the killer, but when you lay everything out it makes sense. He’s attempted to kill the president before. He’s an obsessive person, and if you know librarians it’s the perfect job for him. But he says something to the girl at the gas station that sticks with his story: You’re probably the only person in the world at the right place, at the right time.
Sidenote: And her fat ass was able to make something that made people happy AND eat it all day herself. How many fat characters get a happy storyline?
Cal was lucky to become president when this happened. Xavier was there when the attempt was made on Cal’s life. But moreso than that, Trent just happened to be activated by a drunk president that he hadn’t encountered in the bunker, then a series of events happened that allowed the perfect time for him to execute the one thing he really wanted to do.
Sinatra didn’t need to die and it’s more impressive they put her in a position she can’t talk but once she starts recovering to may be able to keep pulling the levers in a power struggle. Who wants to find out what the VP and her have in store for our protagonists?
There’s a lot of meat left on the bone for Season 2 and beyond. I thought Episode 7 was one of the best episodes of television I’ve ever watched and Episode 8 is one of the most thought provoking episodes of television I’ve ever watched. I’ve been thinking about concepts that apply to the real world currently as well as looking at how stories are formed in other media since I’ve watched. Also, the amount of Easter eggs makes it rewatchable.
I give the whole season an 8.9/10, and I'm bought in for Season 2.
