@Ya? @Ian_Carter @Kitsch @chkmeout @Don Drogo

Olaudah Equiano was from what is modern day Nigeria, though I'm not sure what his ethnic background was.

What is your take on a rum brand being named after him?
Homage or offensive?[/QUOTE]

Thanks for tagging, I cannot speak from a nigerian perspective nor as an Igbo as I am neither but will do so as an african. I dont see how it is offensive, it is a product with an actual relevant story. In addition, the man did not only belong to the African continent but also has a direct story across the atlantic ocean by being taken as a slave.

So he connects the diaspora to Africa. The fact that he had been named after a beverage that helped him gain his freedom makes actual perfect sense. I think it is great that we own our stories but also monetize them, because that is the major fight, economic warfare is what is going to pull africans and the diaspora from our situation, as long as it is done tastefully.

PS. Not a fan that he sourced his distillery in Mauritius instead of Jamaica, although Mauritus is geographically in Africa, it is culturally an Asian (particularly Indian Island). But oh well...

Above the fray.
dope post. I would love to see investments going in this direction. They have the right idea with the cross cultural collaboration.

some shyt like a cassava liquor or beer that sources ingredients in Africa but is cross promoted in Atlanta. everybody eats :takedat:
Was just reading about how sorghum beer is supposed to be the next big thing. The big beer companies are lining up. There's a growing market for gluten free beer, apparently.

That article I read prompted me to find another cross cultural collaboration and create a spin off thread
