The context of these African kings ranging from Musa to Askia should be addressed. Few of them were icons. For example, similar scenes played out in Qing china but instead their leadership was offering non-sentient cargo like silk and silverware.
I can trace my own ancestry back to the late 1700s/ early 1800s Kongo, and as far as i can gather my ancestors were trying to instigate a coup to overturn the congolese slave state, but lost; with themselves being threatened with slavery as the end result. The rest is history.
