Yeah. While the M.I. romps are pure escapism, I don't see much appeal in the Ethan Hunt character at all for the reasons you've mentioned. Outside of being the good guy, there's nothing much from him to root for as a character.
At least with John McClane, he has that "everyman" quality while being laden with everyday problems that viewers immediately identify with in some fashion or another. He actually bleeds and makes us believe his victories were at least a chore to overcome while comin out like a BAUCE!

I just didn't feel the ending... it just felt tacked on and was better off closing with the ship fight
