Was that really neccesary for the article?

This happens so often in stories about people dying. Even in local news, a guy will die in a car accident and it will talk about his surviving members and then throw in some line about an arrest for marijuana possession 2 years earlier. Completely unnecessary but I guess the writers feel that if a guy is dead, it's only natural to throw dirt on them.
