It seems like the open-world buzzword is the saving grace for shytty story lines. Let's throw a bunch random crap in to divert attention from the lackluster story that goes nowhere :comeon: The best game last gen were linear (Last of Us, Bioshock, Uncharted 2, Tomb Raider, Gears :heh:, Dragon Age, Dishonored)
Sadly, I don’t get giddy when I hear about a game, which was once linear, going the open world route. A lot of devs are abusing the hell out of it and pushing mediocre titles. Dont get me wrong, there's ALWAYS exceptions, this is just how i feel.

There was a time when just being "open world" was enough to boost a games reception with gamers. But now everyone's done open world and all the games have the similar go here, follow this person, kill this person gameplay. People are tired of that. Even GTA V was a letdown to a lot of people me included.

I like what MGSGZ is doing with open world. It's a smaller more focused world, but you still have the openness to explore and cause your own mayhem. I still thing Just Cause is one of the best open world games ever, because it was all about create your own fukkery, there weren't very many chase/follow/collect missions. I'm looking forward to just cause 3 as far as open world games go. And also I'm looking forward to some of the first person open world games coming out like mirrors edge.

Dragon Age was "linear"?

anyway the challenge for open world games is to push the gameplay beyond what was already done in GTA3

Just Cause 2 was cool for the fukkery, but the actual game was very repetitive

You forgot Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas & Skyrim. But then that would kill the argument you're trying to make, so I can understand why you'd omit those.

I don't mind Open World as long as it's done right.
Those Rinse and Repeat Missions do get annoying in most of them.

not only that, but they also have to include some structure to the game so players will want to finish the story...but it seems once players hear the word 'open world', they take it as they can do any and everything in a game...when they cant, they dont like it and complain...so they ruining the gaming experience for themselves...
