There are probably a lot of things you learned in school that you don't even remember, but the "order of operations"—also known as PEMDAS—is likely to be one that stuck with you; you'll mess up even simple equations without it. The catch? Well, it's wrong.

The problem, as MinutePhysics explains, is that the real process of solving equations that have multiple operators in them has more to it than your average kid is ever led to believe. I was trying to explain to dudes on the old :hamster: TLR that addition/subtraction and multiplication/division are basically the same operation

When I learned PEMDAS they made it very clear that with addition/subtraction and multiplication/division, you do the one that comes FIRST in the particular problem.

Exactly. I don't know what school these guys went to or what absent minded teacher they had, but that is the rule I always learned...

So no idea what the link in the OP is saying.
