- Gabbert threw a strike to Blake Bell on a corner route for a 20-yard score on the very first play of the period.

- Gabbert connected with Bell on a comeback route from 10 yards out.

- Ponder completed a short touchdown pass to undrafted rookie Bryce Treggs on a slant route.

- On the next play, Ponder found White in the back left corner of the end zone on a perfect touch pass.

- Gabbert's best throw of the day was a rollout pass to Quinton Patton, who got free from Aqib Talib's coverage to catch a 10-yard score.

- Ponder finished the drill with another left corner route to White, who was left uncovered by Denver's defense.

if I was Chip and there wasnt a qb competition, I would easily sit Kaep as well on Sat, too much risk for a player who hasnt practiced throwing against one of the best if not the best defenses in the league

He shouldn't play at all, I heard a rumor a Davis is on the first string line but I haven't been able to confirm it. You don't want to play with Von on the other side with Davis at rt

problem with that is kaep will be way behind gabbert by that point. game 4 starters wont play, so kaep would need to ball out like crazy with #1s and mostly #2s in one game...

my guess is that gabbert starts week 1. but after a 1-4 or 1-5 start, chip will bench him for Kap

Lets be honest, it doesn't matter what either QB does in practice or pre season, or if they even play in pre season. Chip and every fan has their minds made up on who should start week 1. I wouldn't be impressed if Gabbert thru for 3 tds against Denver, he still sucks until he does it when it matters

problem with that is kaep will be way behind gabbert by that point. game 4 starters wont play, so kaep would need to ball out like crazy with #1s and mostly #2s in one game...

If gabbert lays another egg for a second straight week I don't see much separation

In all honesty he should of locked it down by now

I dont agree with this. Chip said preseason games will be the largest determining factors, dont see a reason why he would lie or not give each qb a fair chance.

I wouldn't call it a lie. Of course he wants them to compete for the starting job. But its mostly coach speak. If preseason games were so important to him to determine the starter, why did Gabbert only play what, 2 series? He isn't proven, guys on his level should play the half . Chip was more interested in seeing what he had in Thad Lewis

Defense has talent and chip can coach the offense

If preseason games were so important to him to determine the starter, why did Gabbert only play what, 2 series? He isn't proven, guys on his level should play the half . Chip was more interested in seeing what he had in Thad Lewis

because kaep didnt play as well and we were short on qbs ? if kaep doesnt play on saturday gabbert might only play 1 or 2 series as well. the kaep arm thing threw everything off imo.

I just thought you were implying that chip made the decision pre-preseason, which I doubt.
its actually quite beneficial for both chip and FO to have kaep back as a starter and doing decent, because this would up their credibility. chip will be known more as someone whose can reclaim a project and FO will look smart because they kept kaep paying him his salary.

This what I'm thinking as well.

I know that Chip was planning on playing Gabbert and Kaep significantly before finding out that Kaep wasn't gonna be able to go, but to me it would make sense to play Gabbert more than 2 series when you know that Kaep isn't playing, so Gabbert gets plenty of reps in case Kaep can't go game 1. I'd assume that getting Gabbert as many reps as possible> sitting him to protect him from getting hurt as well.

This what I'm thinking as well.

I know that Chip was planning on playing Gabbert and Kaep significantly before finding out that Kaep wasn't gonna be able to go, but to me it would make sense to play Gabbert more than 2 series when you know that Kaep isn't playing, so Gabbert gets plenty of reps in case Kaep can't go game 1. I'd assume that getting Gabbert as many reps as possible> sitting him to protect him from getting hurt as well.

More reps means higher probability he gets hurt....
