EF5 🌪️ Twisters Touchdown and Wreck Box Office: Weekend Box Office Results (Jul. 19-21)

It's a natural disaster at the box office this weekend. We had category EF0 Twisters touchdown and do serious damage. Tornadoes are categorized with wind speed. EF0 🌪️ have wind speeds of 65-85 MPH. And Twisters earned $80.5M. :ooh: It's the 3rd biggest opening weekend of the year, behind only Inside Out 2 ($154.2M) and Dune 2 ($82.5M). Because of Inside Out 2's dominance, Twisters only has the 4th biggest weekend of the year. 5th place belongs to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire with $80M.

It's another huge July win for Universal. Last year, they had Oppenheimer open with $82.4M. This year, they've already had Despicable Me 4 make $122.6M over its first 5 days, including $75M in its opening weekend.

Just for comparison, the original Twister made $41M in its opening weekend back in 1996. Adjusted for inflation, that's $82.2M. :ehh: Audiences loved it, giving it the same A- CinemaScore as Twister, which went on to make $241.6M. That's a 5.89 opening weekend multiplier. If Twisters shows the same legs, which makes sense, given the word of mouth, then we'd be looking at a $474.3M finish. Of course, Deadpool & Wolverine drops next weekend, throwing a monkey wrench in the eye of that tornado. :lolbron:

The Universal dominance continues up top with Despicable Me 4 making $23.8M in its third weekend. That gives Universal $104.3M between its two movies. DM4's running total is $259.4M. It's looking to dethrone #2 movie the year, Dune 2's $282.1M.

Inside Out 2 was 3rd again with $12.8M. It's coming up on $600M with $596.3M so far. Its $1.44B worldwide total is second all-time for an animated movie, behind only Frozen 2's $1.45B. It'll be the top animated dog in no time.

inside-out-2-envy.gif

Longlegs dropped down to 4th Place with $11.6M. I saw it on Tuesday so I didn't contribute to it on the weekend. :wow: It's still a great horror-hold, only down 47.8% from last weekend. With $44.6M, it's the 25th highest grossing movie of the year. It's made more than Madame Web's $43.8M. It's just behind Argylle's $45.2M. It's also the second highest grossing horror movie of the year, passing The Strangers: Chapter 1's $35.2M.

The number one horror movie of the year, A Quiet Place: Day One, closed out the top five with $6.1M. With $127.6M and counting, it's the #8 movie of the year and one of only 10 to Gross $100M.

Yeah, Twisters blew past early projections. Good to see for theaters, with Longlegs holding up well.

Will be interesting to see how big Deadpool and Wolverine can open up next week, and if it has a chance of challenging Inside Out 2 for the biggest movie of the year.

Deadpool & Wolverine Make Major Green: Weekend Box Office Results (Jul. 26-28)

Ordinarily, I would do this on Sunday but giv en the magnitude of the release that was Deadpool & Wolverine, I decided to wait till today when the official numbers for the weekend dropped. I had a feeling that the number would come in a little higher. As of yesterday, Deadpool & Wolverine was at $205M, which would have been the 9th biggest opening ever, ahead of Black Panther's $202M.

Well, it turns out the number was actually $211.4M. With that, Deadpool & Wolverine is the sixth biggest opening ever, ahead of Jurassic World's $208.8M. Ahead of The Avengers' $207.4M. And officially ahead of the aforementioned Black Panther. It's the 4th best opening in the MCU, behind:
  1. Avengers: Endgame ($357.1M)
  2. Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260.1M)
  3. Avengers: Infinity War ($257.6M)
The $211.4M means Deadpool & Wolverine is already the 4th highest grossing movie of the year, already ahead of the $196.3M Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire made in its entire run. :wow:

It is the biggest opening weekend since fellow MCU entry Spider-Man: No Way Home's $260.1M in December 2021. Disney produced Spider-Man: No Way Home. The other four biggest opening weekends belong to the The last two Avengers and two Disney Star Wars movies. What that means is that Disney has produced the six biggest opening weekends ever.

Speaking of Disney, it had held the record for biggest weekend in July with The Lion King's $191.7M in 2019. Deadpool & Wolverine take the top spot away from Mufasa & Simba. :mjpls:

We can't forget that Deadpool is a rated R franchise. There was some consternation as to if that would remain the case when Disney purchased Fox. Fortunately that has remained the case with Deadpool & Wolverine. The number one opening for a rated R movie had been Deadpool 2 with $132.4M and before that Deadpool with $125.5M. how crazy is that that each successive Deadpool film has opened as the biggest R-rated movie ever. :ehh: All 3 movies got the same A CinemaScore from audiences. That is just tremendous consistency from this franchise. And provided there is not some 69% drop next weekend, we should be looking at the number one movie of the year.

The MCU is back baby...for the time being...at least commercially. :skip:

Twisters had a great second weekend. It only fell by 56.9% en route to $34.9M. :ehh: With $154.6M, it's already the ninth highest grossing movie of the year, passing A Quiet Place:Day One's $134.3M.

tipping-the-hat-tyler-owens.gif

Despicable Me 4 takes third place with $14.5M. It's up to $291.3M which is the second highest total of the year, moving ahead of Dune: Part Two's $282.1M.

bueno-despicable-me-4.gif

Inside Out 2 finished in fourth place with $8.6M. It's now up to $613.7 million. This is a milestone number. It means that Inside Out 2 is the biggest animated movie ever, domestically, surpassing Incredibles 2's $608.5M. It's the biggest animated movie ever worldwide as well, with a $1.5 billion running total, besting Frozen 2's $1.45 billion. Disney coming for that number one spot this year. :wow:

riley-inside-out-2.gif

Fifth place belongs to Longlegs with $6.7M. It's the number 20 movie of the year with $58.6M, moving past Challengers' $50.1M. It also becomes Neons biggest movie, passing Parasite's $53.3M total.

The moment Ryan Reynolds announced that Hugh would be tagging alongside him was the exact moment that movie became critic-proof. That’s some cheat code shyt, fr. Not a perfect movie by any stretch, but I had a lot of fun with it. Debating on seeing it again tonight with the discount Tuesday crowd.

Reports of Disney’s demise were greatly exaggerated. They could fukk around and have three films cross the billion dollar threshold by the end of the year.

Deadpool Really is Marvel Jesus: Weekend Box Office Results (Aug. 2-4)

Deadpool & Wolverine has avoided the recent, dreaded, MCU, 60+%, second weekend drop. For now it's only 54% as sold $97M worth of movie tickets. That's the eighth biggest second weekend ever, ahead of Barbie's $93M and behind Inside Out 2's $101.2M. :whew: It's the fifth best second weekend in MCU history, trailing:
  1. Avengers: Endgame - $147.3M
  2. Avengers: Infinity War - $114.7M
  3. Black Panther - $111.6M
  4. The Avengers - $103M
With $395.5M already and counting, Deadpool & Wolverine is the highest grossing R-rated movie, domestically, passing The Passion of the Christ's $370.7M.
deadpool-deadpool-3.gif
:ohhh: It's obviously the highest grossing movie in the Deadpool franchise blowing past the original's $363M.

It's also the 12th highest grossing movie in the MCU. It's ahead of Spider-Man: Far From Home's $391.3M, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's $389.3M and Vol. 3's $358.9M.

With $824 million in global ticket sales, it is the 17th highest grossing movie in the MCU. It won't be long fore it joins the MCU's billion dollar club.

yes-yess.gif

Taking the 🥈 was Twisters, yet again. This time it grossed $22.6M in its third weekend. It's up to an astounding $195.5M, which ranks 6th at the domestic box office this year. It's ahead of Kung Fu Panda 4's $193.5M and Bad Boys: Ride or Die's $192.9M.

if-you-feel-it-chase-it.gif

M. Night Shyamalan's Trap took the 🥉, opening with $15.6M. That's 10.6% ahead of Shyamalan's last movie (that he directed) Knock at the Cabin which opened with $14.1M in February, 2023. Audiences liked it a lil more, as they scored it a C+ to KATC's straight C. That movie ended up doing 35.3 m. Maybe Trap will have better legs thanks to Josh Hartnett's performance?

trap-movie-josh-hartnett.gif

For the first time in its five week run, Despicable Me 4 has finished outside of the top 3. It took 4th place with $11.2M. Not to worry, though, it's running total is up to $313.9M , which
has it sitting comfortably as the third biggest movie of the year.

evil-smile-maxime-le-mal.gif

Inside Out 2 closes out the top five with $6.7M. It's already the highest grossing animated movie ever domestically and globally. So now it's just running up to score with $626.8M. That's 12th all time, ahead of The Avengers' $623.3M. It's the same story globally as it's racked up $1.55B. That's 10th all time, ahead of, once again, The Avengers' $1.52B.
