Will be interesting to see how well Ghostbusters holds up next week when Kong/Godzilla come through.

If Dune 2 can get to 300 million domestic.

$80M? Sweet Jesus. Godzilla x Kong Resurrect a Dying Franchise on Easter: Weekend Box Office Results (Mar. 29-31)

On this Easter Sunday, the lord was good to the box office. He brought Godzilla and Kong back to the big screen, and, together, The New Empire made $80M. That was up from a $75M estimate on Saturday and $67M on Friday. That's how you overperform right there.

That makes Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire WB's second big hit of the year. The $80M opening is the second best this year, behind Dune 2's $82.5M bow. Along with the aforementioned Dune 2 and Wonka ($85.2M in 2024), this gives Warner Bros. three of the top five grossers this year. They're coming for the crown after finishing 3rd last year. :wow:

How does The New Empire compare to the other MonsterVerse movies? It's the best opening in the franchise since the original Godzilla's $93.1M in 2014. 10 years ago :damn: the opening weekend returns had diminished with each subsequent release culminating in Godzilla vs. Kong's $32.2M in 2021. But that movie helped bring moviegoers back to the box office during the Hong Kong Flu. :manny: This is an unprecedented bounce back and a much needed one for the movies as we approach the Summer.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire went cold with $15.7M. That 65% drop is looking very MCU-ish. Paul Rudd just stays catching L's. Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania had a 69.9% drop in its second weekend last year. This is just with this guy does now I guess. :wow: still though with $73.4M, Frozen Empire is the sixth highest grossing movie of the year passing Migration's $73M made in 2024. However, it is 19% off of Afterlife's pace, of $87.5M after 2 weeks.

Apparently not. Oh s*** you were in Quantumania with Paul. :ohhh: The dynamic duo. :wow:

With $11.1M, Dune: Part 2 crosses the $250 million domestic mark. It now sits at $252.3M. Far and away the year's top earner - a full $100M clear of Kung Fu Panda 4. With $626M worldwide, it's the highest grossing movie of the year and would make it two years in a row for WB after last year's Barbie.

The aforementioned Kung Fu Panda 4 made $10.2M. Its $151.6M running total passes Kung Fu Panda 3's $143.5M total.

Immaculate closed out the top five with $3.2M. with $11.1M its more than double d'd its $5.3M opening from last weekend.

Godzilla and Kong Continue to Expand their New Empire: Weekend Box Office Results (Apr. 5-7)

This weekend at the box office was all about how Godzilla x Kong was going to hold up after its $80 million debut last weekend. After a shaky, $8.5M Friday, (down 76.9%) The New Empire rebounded and muscled out $31.7M. Yeah, it was down 60% but it was looking way worse. Godzilla vs. Kong eased by 57% when it made $13.8M in its second weekend. Not far off at all for the new entry. It's no Dune 2, which did $46.2M in its second frame, but it's a win for WB.

The New Empire is carving out it's place in the Monsterverse. With a $135M running total, it matches its $135M production. That 135m passes the $110.5M final total of Godzilla: King of the Monsters and the $100.9M that Godzilla vs. Kong produced. The New Empire also crossed the $300M global mark with $302.4M.

Taking second place was Dev Patel's Monkey Man with a $10.1 million opening. Looks like the Indian John Wick underperformed a little bit. :yeshrug: shyt, John Wick opened with $14.4M 10 years ago when it also took 2nd place. :ohhh:

With $9M, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire  surprised with a 3rd place finish. With
$88.8 million so far, it's closing in on it's $100 million production budget, which is not what Sony is looking for after 3 weeks. Matterfact, Ghostbusters: Afterlife made $10.3M in its 3rd frame and had a $102.2M running total. That puts Frozen Empire 13% off of Afterlife's pace so far.

Opening in 4th place with a disappointing $8.3M was The First Omen, which is the 6th Omen in the franchise and the first Omen (don't ask me how) since The Omen in 2006 ($16M opening), which was not a re-release of the first Omen, which was The Omen in 1976. :wow: This one is coming on the heels of Immaculate, another nun-centric horror flick. Of course this one doesn't have Sydney Sweeney but Nell Tiger Free, whom you may know from Game of Thrones. She's a terrific actress and really outstanding in the Apple TV+ show Servant. When I saw her in the trailer, I said, :gladbron:, that's perfect casting. so I might check this out on discount Tuesday. The C Cinemascore would normally not inspire confidence, but it's par for the course with horror movies. :manny:

Holding down the 5th spot was Kung Fu Panda 4 with $7.8M in its fifth weekend. That makes it $166M so far for Po and friends, which passes Kung Fu Panda's $165.2M total. That means it only trails Kung Fu Panda's $215.4M for the top spot in the franchise.
