Barbie Ken't be Stopped; Banks a Billy: Weekend Box Office Results (Aug. 4-6)

What a weekend for Warner Bros. Barbie has reached the billion dollar club in 17 days. :damn:
Fresh off a $53 million weekend. It's crossed the $450 million dollar mark with $459.3 million.
That makes it the 24th highest grossing movie of all time domestically. It just passed Age of Ultron's $459.0 million. Star Wars Episode 4, is next to fall with its $460.9 million.

With $1.031 billion, it is the 45th highest grossing movie of all time. It's 3 and 1/2 million away from surpassing Despicable Me 3's $1.034 billion.

Barbie is really crushing her closest competition. That is The Super Mario Bros. Movie and last year's Top Gun: Maverick, both of which are billion plus dollar earners. Mario had made $390.3 million through 17 days. So the doll is 17.8% ahead of the plumber Bros. at the same time in their runs. And she is 16.4% ahead of Maverick's $395.1 million after 17 days. :whoo:

Barbie wasn't the only Warner Bros. property that cleaned up this weekend. With $30 million, Meg 2, improbably, finished in second place. It's even better internationally, with another $112 million, bringing it's global opening to $142 million. That's just a good old-fashioned shark-fueled summer blockbuster. :banderas:

That $30 million opening is down 33.9% from The Meg's $45.4 million, but it opened in 615 fewer theaters. That's a win no matter how you slice it. :ehh: Just you try and stop Statham.

Oppenheimer took 3rd with $28.7 mill. With $228.5 million, it becomes Nolan's 4th highest grossing movie, behind The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises and Inception. Inception made $292.5 million so we'll see if that is the next to fall. Oppenheimer's $555.8 global running total passes Dunkirk's entire run of $512.3 million.

oppenheimer-cillian-murphy.gif

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem had a nice $28 million opening, bringing its 5-day total to $43 million. It was just 5.4% off of Elemental's $29.6 million opening. Who is a different story compared to the 2016 Ninja Turtles movie. It opened up 20.7% lower than that movies 35.3 million. Go Ninja, go Ninja, go?

tmnt-teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles.gif

Disney's Haunted Mansion rounded out the top-5 with $8.9 million. That's a very Marvel-like 62.7% drop in its second weekend. :wow: That brings its total up to $42 mill after two weeks. The original The Haunted Mansion made $45.9 in the same time. So that puts the remake 8.5% off the pace. :ohhh: And The Haunted Mansion went on to make $75.8 million. Gotta think positively.

That's right. :wow:

Notables

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, fell out of the top five but it's up to $151 million domestically and $493.8 million globally. Rogue Nation had made $157.5 million after four weeks. Dead Reckoning is lagging by 4.1%.

Talk to Me had an outstanding second weekend with a 39.9% hold and 6.2 million. I've heard nothing but great things and I've noticed that @Lootpack thread is generating some good discussion. I may have to go see this one.
With $22.1 million, it's on the verge of overtaking other A24 horror movies including The Witch and its $25.1 million and Midsommar which made $27.4 million.

With $80.6 million, Insidious: The Red Door, is on the verge of overtaking Chapter 2's $83.5 million to become the highest grossing domestic entry in the franchise.

I was told box office was dead. I think what happened is people just got tired of the same old shyt and mid ass movies and wanted something fresh :manny:
read this in an article the other day and it really stuck with me. even though not my musical genres.

"it’d be wild if Barbenheimer goes down in history as the ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ that kills off the Superhero Era, which has been in its hair metal phase for a while now.”

Put me in the camp as those who thought Barbie would be successful, but not to this extent.

It being an adaptation of a leading toy brand threw the possibilities of a flop out the window, but I was skeptical on what the ceiling was. To see the speed at which it’s going right now is pretty wild. Got sure legs to overtake Deathly Hallows: Part Two as WB’s highest grossing film.

Greta’s in her household name arc right now. Not there yet, but will be in due time. Curious to see what she pulls off for Narnia. Margot, coming off of the poorly received Babylon, rebounded extremely well here.

Healthy box office weekend overall for a number of films :ehh: . Expect Barbie to be #1 again with the only competition being Dracula on a Boat next weekend.

Ninja Turtles doing $43M over 5 days is pretty decent. Budget wasn't crazy. Everyone should go see it. It's good.

The Meg 2 doing $30M over the weekend is a step down for the first one but the overseas numbers were solid. Budget wasn't crazy. Looks like that will be profitable as well.

Superhero movies won't ever die out. Superman was huge in the 80s. Batman '89 was huge. There will be superhero movies that will do very well but are they oversaturated now? Yes, I believe they are and this Spring and Summer has shown that.

What's at the Movies this Weekend? (Aug. 11-13)

What's at the movies? shyt, you already know. Barbie. Who else? She's already 21st all time with $485.4M at the domestic box office. After the weekend, she'll cut Rey Palpatine and The Rise of Skywalker's $515.2M down and jump into 18th place. With $1.059B in the bank, she should pass The Dark Knight Rises and its $1.081B to become the 35th highest grossing movie ever. What a shame that'll be for me. I saw that movie seven times in theaters. I did my part. And now this Barbie bytch is coming to take it all away. :deadrose:

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are looking for a strong second weekend. The last Ninja Turtles movie, Out of the Shadows, dropped by 59.3% and did $14.3M. Mutant Mayhem has been way better received than that 37% on the tomatometer masterpiece and should have better legs.

Oppenheimer will blow past $600M worldwide. Let's see if it can make $20M. It's looking like the only movie aside form Barbie with a shot of doing that.

With $39.2M in tow, Meg 2, will cross the $50M mark. It's only made $12M so far this week, around the globe. :mjtf: Damn.

Now we come to a new entry, Universal's The Last Voyage of the Demeter. This has Dracula in it. That makes it Universal's second horror film of the year to feature the character, after Renfield. But this Dracula ain't played by Nic Cage. It's like DC with dual Batmen. Gotta love the brief synopsis:

A crew sailing from Carpathia to England find that they are carrying very dangerous cargo.

It's based on a single chapter from Bram Stoker's classic.

What is does have tho is Corey Hawkins, whom I last saw in The Tragedy of Macbeth. And Aisling Franciosi.
An Italian PAWG from Dublin. :banderas: She was in The Fall, a show I enjoyed. She also played Lyanna Stark in Game of Thrones.

lyanna-stark.gif

Matter fact, she, along with Gemma Arterton, were the only reason why I watched Black Narcissus. :mjpls:

The year 3030
Didn't realize GT is 2 weeks away. Thought it was fri, cause they usually have fan screenings a few days before the actual film drop...and the fan screening was just on wed of this week.

They must've pushed back the release

This is where things start getting bleak movie wise. I'm not sure there's anything I want to see until Dune 2 in November if it still comes out
