What's at the Movies this Weekend? Jan. 21-22

For the first time since it dropped, Avatar: The Way of Water, will not be the widest release.

shocked-shock.gif
Oh, the horror. Matter fact, it'll be shown in under 4,000 theaters. 3,802 to be exact. It's still all good though cuz it's now the #6 highest grossing movie ever with $1.93B, passing Spider-Man: No Way Home's $1.92B. Of course, Spidey ain't have the benefit of $214.5M from a Chinese release. A whopping 70.1% of Avatar 2's gross is international. It's #6 but with a couple of pretty big caveats. In any event, it's looking at a $20.4M weekend.

A Man Called Otto, which I just saw a new trailer for during the C's - Warriors game, is now the top dog, being shown at 3,802 venues. This shyt has already made $25M domestically. It's looking at $9M. It'll pass the $50M mark worldwide.

M3GAN adds 23 theaters. That's back to back weekends where it's expanded. It'll blow past $100M worldwide, as it sits at $97.6M. It'll definitely make it past $70M domestically this weekend. Boxoffice Pro is saying it'll make $10.6M. Looking at the holds of The Black Phone and Smile, I'm thinking it could do up to $12.4M.

Don't look now but Puss in Boots has made $113.9M domestically and $257M worldwide. :ehh: It jumped up 6.8% last weekend when it ended up making $14.4M. Unreal, for a movie that's already available at home. Can it cross $125M this weekend? Go to one of the 3,601 theaters It's showing at to help it out.

Plane will depart from Lionsgate and land at 3,060 theaters. It's added a couple connecting flights. :wow: It's 76% fresh on 🍅. It looks to add $5.6M to its $13.5M total and make it to $20M.

Wakanda Forever has now made $450.3M domestically. It will be released in China on February 7th, as it looks to add to the $387.3M it's made internationally. It will be the first Marvel movie to release in China since Far From Home in 2019. Spidey made $198M. Black Panther made $105M. China should put this movie over $900M worldwide.

The Storm Reid vehicle, Missing, debuts in 3,025 theaters. I just saw that it's a sequel to 2018's Searching, which has a 7.6 on IMDb. :ohhh: I never saw it. Maybe I should. It made $26M domestically and $75.6M worldwide How the hell did I miss that? :gucci:

This synopsis:

After her mother goes missing, a young woman tries to find her from home, using tools available to her online.

Storm has had a nice little run over the past few years with Euphoria, The Invisible Man and The Suicide Squad. Her thread, courtesy of @Kang The Conqueror:
You've probably seen the trailer if you've been to the movies recently. I've only seen it once on tv.

Searching debuted with $6M from 1,207 theaters in 2018. Missing is looking at $5.6M.

We got That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime The Movie: Scarlet Bond dropping from Crunchyroll. I'm not into anime like that. The show has an 8.1 rating on IMDb though. :ehh:
What's it about?

Average 37-year-old Minami Satoru dies and is reincarnated as the most unremarkable creature imaginable- a slime.

It'll show in 1,700 theaters. The last Crunchyroll joint, One Piece Film: Red, grossed $162.5M worldwide. The trailer is 👇🏾

Catch y'all on Sunday :salute:

My Thoughts

Another weekend, another number one finish for Avatar: The Way of Water. Down 40% from last weekend but still taking home $19.6M like it's nothing. Jim Cam'ron a long way away from having to get a job making $30,000 a year, having to payback his fukkin student loans. :umad: Its $597.9M domestic running total is now just $10.6M shy of overtaking Incredibles 2 for 12th all time. Worldwide, its $2.0B is looking up at Avengers: Infinity War and it's $2.04B. Once it dusts the Avengers like Thanos, it'll be the #5 highest grossing movie ever. And Jimmy will have 3 movies in that top 5. :banderas:

avatar-well-alright-then.gif

Man Puss in Boots 2 just continues to have tremendous holds, only dropping off by 21% as it took home $11.5M. That's a better hold than Sing 2's 28% drop in its 5th weekend. That movie, released in December of 2021, went on to make $162.7M domestically and $404M worldwide. The orange tabby is already brought in $126.4M domestically and $297.5M worldwide. I was swinging through NY as Miles Morales, rocking the Bodega suit with the orange tabby, Spider-Man. That's one way I show my support.

miles-morales-ps4.gif

Trading places with Puss was M3GAN, which made $9.8M. That represented a 46% decline from last weekend, well off the 36% and 32% drops The Black Phone and Smile experienced in their third weekends. How far off? That's 27.8% off The Black Phone's pace and 43.8% off of what Smile did. And both of those were R rated horror movies. M3GAN 2.0 is coming and version 1 has now made $73.2M domestic and $124.6M worldwide. So, you don't have to cry, Cady.

wiping-off-tears-cady.gif

Debuting in fourth place with an impressive $9.3M was Missing. It out grossed its $7M production budget. $760K came from Thursday previews. It was the rare movie that was up on Saturday. It's $3.6M was a 7% increase from Friday. 2018's Searching grossed $6M in its debut weekend. Box office pro was way off on this one with that $5.6M prediction. Once I saw it's preview total, yesterday, I thought it would do nearly 10M like Plane did last weekend with $625K from Thursday previews. I might have to check this one out... Still haven't seen Searching tho.

what-missing-movie.gif

A Man Called Otto just continues to do numbers with another $9M. That was down just 30% from last weekend. :ohhh: I guess, don't doubt Tom Hanks' power in middle of America. He's got this bytch to $35.3M. Can it make it to 50M?

oof-otto.gif

Notables Outside The Top Five

Plane is up to $19.4M.

The Crunchyroll anime joint, That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime, debuted with $1.4M.

The Whale is up to $13.1M, after another 1M+ weekend.

The Shudder horror flick, Skinamarink, is up to $1.5M.

Catch y'all next week :salute:

I recommend missing, dope flick
As quiet as it's kept, every single Universal animation film released last year out grossed ever single Disney/Pixar animation film released. Universal Illumination has beat them overall 3 years straight.

Is that hanks film getting traction like that?

Looked boring/typical from the previews
I peeped that…like why are they Adding theaters for that? :patrice:

I haven’t been paying attention to Oscar related stuff at all…is Otto a contender or some shyt?

I hope the weekend numbers for Infinity Pool are decent. That’s some fukkery that’s worth watching. Something good and chilling for a Friday or Saturday night showing. Just be sure you don’t run into a mugger while you and your fam walk through a dark alley eating leftover popcorn after the show (y’all ain’t gon catch the reference :mjlol:)

Avatar Two is Too Much for Oscar Bait: Weekend Box Office Results (Jan. 27-29)

So on Friday for "What's at the Movies," I wrote a whole bunch of s*** about all the Oscar nominations that would be re-released and expanded because Oscarbait Season has returned.

giphy.gif

Unfortunately, that comment got deleted as is now par for the course.

Nevertheless, I digress. All that Oscar bait was no match for Avatar: The Way of Water, which took home first place for the 7th consecutive weekend with 15.7 million. That 7 week streak at number one ties the original Avatar for the longest ever.

That brings its running total to an astonishing $620.5 million. That makes the Avatar sequel the 11th highest grossing movie all time domestically, just ahead of it The Last Jedi's $620.1 million. It just needs to overtake The Avenger's $623.3 million to crack the top 10. Can it get past Jurassic World's $653.4 million? Its $2.11 billion make it the fourth highest grossing film ever worldwide. The only film in the top three that James Cameron did not direct is Avengers: Endgame with its $2.79 billion.

avatar-see-you-later.gif

Puss in Boots 2 continues to maintain with great holds. This week, it took home another $10.6 million, only down 10% from last weekend. It's made $140.8 million. It's cracked the $300 million mark worldwide at $334.1 million. It's only 4.8% off Sing 2's six week pace of $134.3 million from the same point last year. That animated Universal flick went on to make $162.7 million domestically and $408.3 million worldwide. And this is being done while the film is available to stream at home on-demand.

yee-haw-puss.gif

A Man Called Otto just keeps chugging along with another $6.7 million. It's up to $46 million domestically, closing in on its $50 million production budget. It's cracked $70.9 million worldwide. It's not up for any Oscars but Tom Hanks is nominated for Best Actor at the AARP Movies for Grown Ups Awards.:skip: So apparently AARP bait season is upon us. :dead:

disappointed-otto.gif

Dropping one spot from last weekend in the fourth place was M3GAN with $6.3 million. It was only down 34% in its fourth weekend. That is impressive any way you slice it, especially for horror movie. That brings its running domestic total to $82.2 million domestically and $146 million worldwide.

good-job-cady.gif

Rounding out the top five was a movie that nobody ever heard of, Pathaan. What's it about? "An Indian spy takes on the leader of a group of mercenaries who have nefarious plans to target his homeland." It played in 695 theaters and made an impressive $5.9 million. God damn, mahavishnu. It did have the girl who played Serena Unger in the last XXX movie, Deepika Padukone. I don't know that name. You don't know that name. It doesn't matter. Here's a picture.

Notables Outside The Top Five

Infinity Pool, the new horror movie from Brandon Cronenberg (son of David) starring new scream queen, Mia Goth, debuted with $2.7M. It has a C- Cinemascore.

Kevin Sorbo, who I haven't seen since watching him in Hercules in 1997, cracked the top 10 with Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist. :dead:

The Tommy from Power starring Fear debuted with $1.2 million from 974 theaters.

Oscar Bait

Everything Everywhere All at Once made $1M from 1,400 theaters. It hasn't been in theaters since October.

The Whale added 130 theaters and made $1M.

Women Talking made $1M from 707 theaters, which was an additional 553 theaters.

The Fablemans, which added 1,015 theaters made 760K. John Williams is 90 years old and is nominated for best original score. The Fableman's marks the 31st film collaboration between Williams and Spielberg, a partnership which started with 1974's The Sugarland Express. I was listening to the soundtrack, and you can still hear that old John Williams magic.

Living made $585K from 644 theaters.

The Banshees of Inisherin made $353K from 1,205 theaters, which was an additional 1,050 from last weekend.

Tár made $174K from 537 theaters.

1) Avatar: The Way of Water- $15,700,000 ($620,580,771)
