What's at the Movies this Columbus Day Weekend? October 7-9

We now enter October's first full weekend. It's been an Indian Summer. It was 71 in Boston today and it's gonna be 76 tomorrow. Not very Fall like. But it was nice enough weather that I was out there putting up the Halloween decorations. :ehh: How scary is it gonna be at the Box Office this weekend? Let's see.

This weekend's widest release belongs to Sony's Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, at 4,350 theaters. It looks like a wholesome, family film. Shawn Mendes performs the songs that Lyle, the Crocodile, sings, like Danny Elfman did for Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas. We'll see if Mendes is a draw. :manny: My guy, Murray, from Stranger Things, plays Mr. Grumps. He was always entertaining in Stranger Things. Javier Bardem also stars, along with Constance Wu. She was in The Terminal List, which I enjoyed. Her thread, courtesy of @casa bey:

That shyt ain't been updated in damn near 3 years. Iont know what happened but it's there for you. :yeshrug: Here's the trailer for the singing crocodile movie:

We have David O. Russell's Amsterdam, debuting in 3,005 theaters and looking to take home $10M+. It's only at a 48 on Metacritic and has been getting middling reviews despite the all star cast. Margo Robbie and Anya Taylor-Joy star amongst others. Anya's thread, courtesy of @Kiyoshi-Dono:
It also has Andrea Riseborough, who I liked in Oblivion. We woulda made an effective team.

I3apgcTICEoXha7wG-2SCGau8AbGMX7uQ_sjL4ap7Rw.jpg

Amsterdam's trailer, which also stars Christian Bale, which I neglected to mention. Batman is in this shyt, fresh off of his appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Smile, fresh off of a $22.6M opening weekend, and a $30M first week, sees an increase of 9 theaters, up to 3,650. Horror movies usually drop by 65% in their second weekend, so look for $14M-$15M. I still gotta see it. It's sitting at a 7.0 on IMDb, which is a legit score for a horror movie and a 68 on Metacritic. Can it sneak past the singing crocodile?

Universal won't let them hombros die, as Bros actually sees a 6 theater increase. :dwillhuh:
Boxoffice Pro is projecting $2.9M. Nah. Nah. It's at $6.3M after a week. I don't know if it'll break $2.5M. We'll see. Well, I won't, and you probably won't. Sorry, Billy. :mjlol:

There's no other new theatrical releases this weekend. We'll see if Don't Worry Darling can out gross The Woman King again. That should be tough with how it dropped last weekend. This weekend, Don't Worry Darling, sees a 797 theater drop. it'll actually be playing in 18 fewer theaters than The Woman King. Look for them to flip flop places from last weekend.

I mentioned that we don't have any other new theatrical releases this weekend. We do have the release of Hellraiser on Hulu, which should be available right now, since it's 12:01. We also have the release of Werewolf by Night in Disney+ which will drop at 3:01 am. I was planning on doing a streaming Horror double feature with these two. I might even throw Hocus Pocus 2 in there and make it a trifecta.

My apologies for not contributing to the Box Office. :yeshrug:

Horror Fans, 'Smile,' We Chopping Down 'Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile : Weekend Box Office Results (Oct. 7-9)

*UPSET ALERT*

We have an upset. It's always funny when the prognosticators get it wrong. That's models for ya, I guess. :yeshrug: The presumed favorite singing crocodile movie was no match for Smile, which remained number 1 with $17.6M. Paramount put it in 9 more theaters and was rewarded with an astounding 22.2% decline from it's debut last weekend. Like I mentioned before, horror movies typically drop 60-65% in their second weekends. That 22.2% decline is only a third of what is typically expected. Not since Get Out's (which is also on Freeform as I write this) second weekend decline of only 15% has a rated R horror movie performed so well. :ehh: I know Paramount is smiling cuz their movie has now grossed $49.8M domestically and $89.8M worldwide. Looks like that viral marketing really worked.

Now we get to Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, the singing crocodile movie starring (the singing voice of) Shawn Mendes. This was pegged to finish in first with $15M. Alas, it wasn't meant to be. $11.5M and a second place finish will have to do. It did $575K in Thursday previews in 3,453 theaters before expanding wider on Friday and grossing $3M. Lyle did sing his way to $4.4M on Saturday, up 25% from Friday. Another rare new movie to debut with a better Saturday. Still got a ways to go to recoup that $50M budget.

curious-lyle.gif

Take it easy with the head tilts, Lyle. That's reserved for Michael Myers.

Taking third place with a disappointing $6.5M was the star-studded Amsterdam. That's sad for all those involved. Maybe it had something to do with the movie being middling with it's 47 score on Metacritic. Maybe it had something to do with David O. Russell's abuse allegations. :yeshrug:Either way, it only did $2.6M on Friday, which includes $550K in Thursday previews. Not what the good people of Disney are looking for with that $80M production budget. The movie was hard to market and hard to find gifs that I can work into my storytelling. :dead:

Oh, here's one.

PoliteSophisticatedIberianmole-size_restricted.gif

Sorry, y'all. I don't think we can blame me for this one tho.

We come to the poll question, which actually got 2 votes. I was surprised to see that. Both voters thought that Don't Worry Darling would out gross The Woman King. The Woman was King and took fourth place with $5.3M. That was only down 22.2% from last weekend and brings it's total domestic haul to $54.1M and $64.1M worldwide.

im-on-my-way-nanisca.gif

You keep on running past those white women, Viola.

Don't Worry Darling lost the competition with $3.4M in it's third weekend. It's only a week behind The Woman King in it's release but already dropped by 49.2% this weekend. It's not all bad though. It's up to $38.4M domestically and $69.2M worldwide, which is $5.1M more than The Woman King. :yeshrug:

changing-the-world-mary.gif

Well, at least, making more change in the world. :skip:

Notables Outside the Top Five

Bros fell from top 5 to not mentioned at all, which, in this case, means 8th place. Like I thought, it didn't make it past $2.5M, with $2.1M. There's always Biktarvy tho. :dame:

Top Gun: Maverick finished at number 10, but, for the first time in it's 20 weekends, it failed to gross $1M, as it took $800K.

Amsterdam deserved that bomb, all the way. Could tell how forgettable the story was gonna be with the way the trailers practically bragged about how many stars it could fit on the bill.

David O. Russell is also just an overrated hack to me. He tried replicating Scorsese before and this one here had the look of a film that the Coen Bros would do far better with. Oh well.

It's weird cuz I don't think of Russell when I think of great directors. He has four ⭐⭐⭐ 1/2 movies: Three Kings, (haven't seen it) The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle. The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook were great. I didn't like American Hustle. Didn't watch Joy either.

Maybe he's putting up numbers on a bad team with a couple of legit All Star seasons mixed in there.

Halloween Ends definitely taking the top spot. Kills opened with $49.4M while streaming on Peacock. Ends is also day and date on Peacock. I saw one projection that said between $35M - $45M for the opening. That makes sense with the trajectory so far with Halloween opening at $76.2M. But maybe they'll be a lil post-pandemic bounce back from last year?

Michael Myers Comes Home. What's at the Movies this Weekend? (Oct. 14-16)

Finally... Michael Myers has come back...to Haddonfield...and your home via Peacock.

appurock-appurajosh.gif
michael-myers-scary.gif

What is that arm swing? It's fukkin preposterous. It's like he's swinging the prosthetic arm from The Fugitive. Get your shyt together, Mike. :dead:

Mike and Laurie will be swinging their knife wielding arms, and non knife wielding arms, in Mike's case, back into 3,901 theaters, this weekend. Like Halloween Kills, this trilogy coda will also be streaming on Peacock.

Last year, Halloween Kills, opened in 3,705 theaters and grossed $49.4M, on it's way to a domestic total of $92M. That was down 2018's Halloween, which opened with $76.2M in 3,928 theaters. Halloween would go on to gross $159.3M domestically. Can Mike slash his way to $50M? Here's the trailer, which I'm sure you've seen at least 7 times by now.

Like last week, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, has the widest release, still showing in 4,350 theaters. It opened to $11.4M last weekend and the Boxoffice Pro folks are projecting $6.8M.

Smile is expected to do around $10M. It will be showing in 3,612 theaters. It's currently grossed $57.1M domestically and $103.9M worldwide. It only fell 18.3% last weekend but Mikey's here. And he's swinging Old Huckleberry. Evil dies tonight! Evil dies tonight! :mjlol:

I've updated the "What's Playing" chart to now include each movie's gross to date. You can see that Minions: The Rise of Gru will go past $368M this weekend, with it's $500K projection. That will be enough to pass Despicable Me 2's $368.065M domestic gross, which is the highest grossing film in the Despicable Me franchise.

But enough of that. One more day till Halloween, Halloween, Halloween! One more day till Halloween! Silver Shamrock! ☘️

Before I go, though, what's your favorite Halloween moment / kill? And by Halloween, I mean Michael Myers.

John Strode's exploding head in Halloween 6 always makes me hit the :gladbron:

Mike playing with the chains in the jail cell at the end of Halloween 5 always gets me. :mjlol:

Evil Dies Tonight :damn: Michael Myers Goes Out in Style; Head Stomps 'Smile.' Weekend Box Office Results (Oct. 14-16)

Halloween Ends is finally here and it sucks. It's bad. I'm talking Halloween Resurrection and Rob Zombie's Halloween ll bad. :picard: There were a few cool shots of Mike, barely visible, lingering and lurking in the background. Couple cool kills. I gotta give the movie it's props.

But that's where it stops.

This shyt was

4nPb.gif

What was not grotesque, was it's performance at the box office, where it came in first with $41.2M. That's a win but it's one of those wins where you were playing a terrible team who you were expected to mop, only to end up in a struggle, and need a 4th quarter comeback to secure the victory. Halloween Ends was expected to do near $50M even with the simultaneous streaming on Peacock. What happened? It sucked. That's what happened. I'm not gonna be like Deadline and blame the day and date Peacock release. Call a spade a spade. :mjpls:

Ends did an impressive $5.4M in Thursday previews, which was more than Halloween Kills' $4.85M. Ends grossed $15M on Friday compared to Kills' $17.9M. That $2.9M difference from Thursday previews to Friday is word of mouth. That's what happens when your movie is trash.

michael-myers-halloween.gif

That's right, Mike. Who the fukk you tilting your head at?

Of course, last year's Halloween Kills, which was a step down from 2018's Halloween, debuted with $49.4M. Like Kills, Ends also has a $20M production budget. It's already at $58.4M worldwide. That's 2.9 times the production budget so it's already a box office and Peacock success. Evil did not die tonight but Donald Pleasence and Moustapha Akkad are rolling over in they graves.

loomis-doctor-loomis.gif

Smile is still doing it's thing with another $12.4M weekend. That represents only a 33.1% drop from last weekend and it's now up to $71.1M domestically and an, checks notes, $137.5M worldwide. :leon: Horror holding strong.

scared-rose-cotter.gif

It's aight, you don't have to be scared. :whoa: Mike gonna fall off next weekend anyway.

Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile fell one place from last weekend with $7.3M. It's now totaled $22.Boeing 757 million domestically. It's only opened in two international territories, where it's grossed $3.9M, for a total of $26.6M.

curious-lyle.gif

Last week, I said you couldn't do the head tilt cuz that was reserved for Michael Myers. I take that back. Tilt away. Mike's head tilting privileges have been revoked for the foreseeable future.

531dec9168361c759285675badb8d8188a107929.gifv

That's right, mothafukka. Witchya goofy ass.

Holding 4th place down for another weekend was The Woman King, with another 3.6M. This movie is holding steady, only dropping 28.5% from last weekend, despite Making a Michael Myers terrorizing movie-goers. With $76.5M worldwide, it's still only grossed 1.5 times its $50M production budget so it's not some great success yet.

some-things-are-worth-fighting-for-nanisca.gif

Well, you better keep fighting cuz you ain't even broke the $60M mark domestically yet. :manny:

Tumbling 55.1% but still finishing at #5 was Amsterdam, with $2.8M. The two week total isn't even $12M. Damn. Even the $6.5M international gross is only enough for it to total $18.4M. And we thought the Biktarvy Bros was bad.

Notables Outside the Top Five

After earning $417K, Minions: The Rise of Gru, has now grossed $368.6M domestically. It moves past Despicable Me 2's $368M to become the top domestic grosser in the Despicable franchise.

With $275K, The Invitation had now grossed $25M domestically. It's now 52 days into it's release. With $33.6M worldwide, on a $10M production budget, that's a success.
