August 19-21 Weekend Box Office Results:
"(Dragon Ball) Super Heroes (are) Super" again as they "Beast" their way to the Top of the Charts

Gotta admit, I'm not a "Dragon Ball" fan. Never have been. Never had any interest in it. That being said, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, did take first place this weekend with $15.8 million, with $4.3 million coming from Thursday previews. It was projected to do $13.2 million. I mean, this shyt was distributed by Crunchyroll. Only time I've ever heard of Crunchyroll was when I saw it on the list of streaming apps on my PS4, years ago. :mjlol: Apparently, only 10% of people who bought tickets saw TV ads for Dragon Ball compared to 39% who saw the YouTube trailer. That's some damn effective online marketing. It also pulled in an additional $12 million Internationally for a total of $32.1 million worldwide. :ehh:

Coming in second was the Idris Elba vehicle,  Beast, which grossed $11.5 million. I mean, that's not bad, if you consider that it was projected to do $10 million. But that projection was based on a release of 3,500 theaters. Beast showed in 3,743 theaters. So, right in line with projections. With a $36 million production budget, that's disappointing, in a vacuum. But, Universal just went over $3 billion at the worldwide box office, so they'll be aight. That being said, Beast, is sitting at a :scust: 5.9 on IMDb. That's good for :2stars:. Still tho, it did pull in $10.2 mill at the international box office, for a total of $21.8 mill worldwide. So, it ain't all bad.

:mjlol: :mjlol: :mjlol:

Pulling into third place was Bullet Train with $8 million. That was down by 40% from last week. It saw a reduction of 576 theaters. It did a lil better than projections projected: $7.6 million / 43% decline. So, the Bullet Train is still on the tracks. It's grossed $149.9 worldwide, including $68.9 million domestically. That's still only a worldwide box office of 1.7 times the $85.9 million budget. 2.5 is the magical break-even point. Still a ways to go for Bullet Train.

right-on-schedule-prince.gif

Sorry, Joey; I don't think so.

Still holding on in the Top Five is Top Gun: Maverick, taking the number four spot with $5.8 million. That's only down 17.1% from last weekend. Another week, another record. With $683.3 million, Top Gun: Maverick, has now passed Avengers: Infinity War ($678.8 mill) for 6th place all time at the Domestic Box Office. It's 19th all time adjusted for inflation, right behind Close Encounters of the Third Kind at $685.7 million. At $1.403 billion, it just passed Avengers: Age of Ultron's $1.402 billion, to move into 12 place all time at the Worldwide Box Office. What more can I say? Goose, play the beat.

tom-cruise-top-gun.gif

It's no surprise that DC League of Super Pets rounded out the Top Five, with $5.7 million. Projected to gross $4.9 million with a drop of 30%, The Rock turned those numbers sideways and stuck em right up the prognosticators candy asses. :damn: Super Pets only fell 17.5%. Still, with a worldwide gross of $130.3 million ($67.4 mill domestically) its still only grossed 1.4 times its $90 million production budget. That's a lil behind Bullet Train in terms of Warner Bros. (Discovery :scust:) breaking even. $24.8 million, to be exact. Whatchu think Zaslav is looking like looking at those numbers?

freak-out-batman.gif

Yeah, probably.

Notables Outside the Top Five

Nope has now grossed $19.2 million in 34 international markets. It's up to $133 million worldwide.

Minions: The Rise of Gru just released in China and grossed $11.7 million. Universal gets to keep $2.9 mill of that. It's now up to $833.6 million worldwide. It's also number 5 this year at the Domestic Box Office.

Jurassic World Dominion is up to $984.7 million worldwide. It just keeps climbing. Can it make a billion?

I didn't mention this last weekend, but, E.T. was re-released in IMAX for it's 40th anniversary. It's now grossed $1.7 million, including another $310,000 this weekend. That's one I'd like to see in the theater seeing how it came out before mama spit me out in the spital.

See y'all next weekend :salute:

My Thoughts

Idris Elba bout to be everywhere this weekend as Beast sees an 11 theater increase in it's release up to 3754 theaters. Beast currently sits at $14.5 million domestically and $25.1 mill worldwide. It's still $65 mill shy of breaking even so Universal said "up the theater count on that bytch." It's projected to gross $6.4 mill this weekend after pulling in $11.5 in it's debut last week.

Idris has a new movie, Three Thousand Years of Longing, coming to 2436 theaters. The dude plays a Djinn and the George Miller directed flick courtesy of MGM (aka Amazon). It's looking at $3 million.

The Invitation, which was originally called The Bride, debuts at 3114 theaters. The trailer I saw made it look like a Vampire Ready or Not starring, Nathalie Emmanuel. :whew:

nathalie-emmanuel-nathalie.gif

It looks to pull in $9 million. That would put an end to a 65 weekend streak of a $10+ million earning movie at the Domestic Box Office.

Jurassic World Dominion is really tryna reach a billion bucks ($987.7 mill) as it expands to 1512 theaters. That's more than double it's theater count from last weekend.

We also get a re-release with 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, playing in 255 theaters, including 150 IMAX. The new Andor series premieres on September 21st on Disney Plus, so Disney is upping the promotion. I saw it in IMAX when it came out. Darth Vader fukkin dudes up in the hallway? :wow:

We'll see what happens this weekend. I'll catch y'all on Sunday.

My Thoughts

Safe to say the scariest thing this weekend was The Invitation's box office performance. With a sub-lar $7 million, the vampiric horror movie sucked audiences of the will to go to the movies, despite extending an Invitation. So much for that $9M projection. :hubie: But hey, at least it was number one tho! With a $10 million budget, it's not inconceivable that this can turn a profit for Sony but this shyt it sitting at a 5.4 on IMDb out of 1,110 votes. That's the equivalent to :2stars:. Are you rushing to the movies to see some ⭐⭐ mid, vampire, Ready or Not knockoff? We did that for Michael Myers last year and we'll do it again on October 14th. With that being said, as I posted earlier, this breaks a 65 weekend streak of a $10M earner at the weekend box office. We gotta go back to the weekend of May 21, 2021 when Spiral took first place with $4.5M. The next weekend, A Quiet Place Part ll came through and restored the feeling with $47.5M. Ain't nothing like that on the horizon for next weekend. :francis:

gasp-evie.gif

Bullet Train is still on the tracks, pulling in another $5.6M to take second place. It was only down 30% from last weekend and now sits at $78.2M domestically and $173.6M worldwide. It's still around $41M from breaking even after 4 weeks in theaters. But Sony got the first two slots so there's that.

domo-arigato-ladybug.gif

You're welcome, Brad.

Swapping places with Bullet Train was Beast, which took third place with $4.9M. Down 57.7% from last weekend's second place finish, the Idris Elba Safari vehicle, has now grossed $20M domestically and $36.1M at the Worldwide Box Office. That means it has now grossed it's $36M production budget after two weekends. Gotta take them lil victories when you can. It's not like Universal is hard up tho, as we know, they passed $3 billion at the worldwide box office weeks ago.

slow-down-dr-nate-samuels.gif

You are slowing down. I think we need Ian Malcolm to tell you

go-must-go-faster.gif

In it's 14th weekend, Top Gun: Maverick, remained in fourth place, with another $4.7M, only down 19.7% from last weekend. Damn, Hollywood really owes Tom Cruise a debt of honor after this shyt. It's now at $691.2M, only $9.3M away from overtaking Black Panther's $700.4M for fifth place all time at the Domestic Box Office. And this is with the movie now being on demand. Maverick is on the "Highway" and Black Panther is in the "Danger Zone."

archer-top-gun.gif

Rounding out the top five was Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, with $4.5M. That was down 78.4% from last weekend's fist place debut. :picard: After two weeks, the anime has now grossed $30.7M domestically and $57.1M worldwide. Distributed by Crunchyroll, this gives Sony three of the top five slots this weekend. We'll see what happens next weekend when Spider-Man: No Way Home — The More Fun Stuff Version is re-released in 3,000 theaters.

1? Nah that was last week.

Notables Outside the Top Five

Three Thousand Years of Longing, the other Idris Elba vehicle, only took in $2.8M from 2,436 theaters, good, well, not really, tho, for seventh place. I'm sure Amazon / MGM / United Artists made a wish that this wish granting Djinn movie would gross more money.

Minions: The Rise of Gru, has blown past $500M at the international box office and now sits at $868.8 worldwide.

Nope took a lil tumble off the cliff and fell out of the top 10 down to eleventh place with $2.2M. It's now up to $117.6M domestically and $148.7M worldwide.

The re-release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, grossed $1.1M in 255 theaters. It now sits at $533.2M domestically and $1.05B worldwide.

Bodies Bodies Bodies did $1M and is now just shy of $10M domestically with $9.7M.

Universal was really smart to up the theater count for Jurassic World Dominion, as it pulled in $680,310. That was up 27.5% from last weekend. I thought it would about $560K based on last weekend and the wider release this weekend. That's impressive. It now stands at $990.4M worldwide. Jurassic World is tryna close out the trilogy going 3 for 3 with billion dollar earners. This is something I've been tracking for a minute now. Don't let John Hammond's dream die :damn:

Thanks for reading, y'all. I appreciate it. Catch y'all next week. :salute:
