The ironic thing about all this is DJ Vlad, the guy that perpetuates the "Nas picks bad beats" narrative to this day, said that "Cops Shot the Kid" was the best song on the album.

There's a remix that uses the "Children's Story" beat and cuts out Kanye's verse. The "cops shot the kid" sample is also integrated better. It took an average song and made it fire with a few changes.

It was deliberate but not to spite Kanye. Nas had been wanting to work with Hit Boy extensively since Life Is Good era. They did two songs together, Black Girl Lost Part 2 and No Such Thing As White Jesus with Frank Ocean that never got released because Hit lost the files. They recreated the song and it became Royalty off of Lost Tapes 2.

Nas had been looking to lock in with Hit for years, they’re mutual friend G-Code helped make the connection for them to KD1 and the rest is history
