So big that after a certain point it wasn't really cool to like him if you were a straight up hip-hop/rap fan. He was the man when I was in middle school....by 9th grade (which was around the time he started doing commercials, movies, cartoons, toys, etc.) he was considered a clown.
Keep in mind this was before most rappers (and by extension) rap fans gave a fukk about mainstream acceptance. So actively trying to cross over and/or go mainstream was frowned upon.
I'm not saying it was right but

that's just how it was.
