Y'all are technically both right. Even though it's semantics. The baby who eventually becomes his future wife was indeed in the carriage with her mother. However, he was in the hidden box alone, so he wouldn't of known or realized anything about the baby. When he came to after the explosion, he initially thought he was alone and only found the baby after she started crying in the grass.
