As insane and stupid as that is, it's probably a legal ploy to get a conviction thrown out. Simply because he did not have proper representation. And he's hoping that someone pardons him like they did Nixon.

For one, it gave them more of what they wanted politically to encourage voter apathy than jt did to outwardly show their proto fascism. And two, they need to be in a place to pivot away from Trumpism if that well dries up.
No need to give them the benefit of the doubt of actually changing their views

I feel you, but I really think this might be the thing to at the very least get him out the paint of running for office again. This situation is pretty straight forward in what happened. There's no ambiguity, no nuance, no "he didn't mean this when he told someone that", etc. He took stuff he shouldn't have taken, was suspected of lying when he said he gave it all back, and was proven he lied when the fbi found more. And b/c of his hard on for Hillary, he made the punishment for this type of crime way more severe. Out of the three times he got in serious hot water (getting impeached twice and this), this has the highest chance of actually getting a conviction.
