Where I shouldn't be
You gotta put this in context back then; it's '99, BIG's been dead 2yrs, Mase left, Puff's only had one album out and the Industry buzzing bout a kid that sounds just like BIG! I heard the Shyne signing buzz even over in the UK that year it was real.
He signs and Puff is being praised again, they then drop the Total remix he's on (& his mixtape leaks) and you come find out he's a Street rapper with little lyrical skill...Nothing like Badboy had done up to point.(The LOX could do both). And he never looked like a 'No.2 type-guy like Puff had played wit BIG & Mase.

Also this was Puff at his most flamboyant, truck jewellery, iced out bangles I.e. in hindsight he bet the house on dude, then the case happened...

There was real buzz but it was because nobody had actually heard him; just word of mouth about him. That couldn't happen today.

I'd say the three guys with the most buzz around that time were Canibus, DMX and Shyne. But we'd heard Canibus and DMX kill features, so it added up. That wasn't drummed up by execs, DJs and media types. All the buzz about Shyne was "wait til you hear this kid. It's like Big came back." When people actually heard him, the buzz evaporated.

The Industry was ready to write him off as a BIG Clone... That shooting boosted his rep and made him a "real one". Then he dropped Bad Boyz Anthem(Which was a classic) and the ball was running from there.

The tracks I remember from around that time were

Anywhere (remix)
Sittin Home (Remix)
From Scratch
Reverse
PE 2000 remix

I heard all those in real time, or most of them, Shyne had a lot of buzz before the shooting, at least in rap media circles. The time line unfolded really fast, at least for back then, the shooting was December 1999, then by June 2000, Bad Boyz had dropped.

That summer, I fukking recorded that on a VHS from BET to play. I made my Mom order me the cd single, which turned out to be the 12", which I still have to this day. Now, I can see the flaws in his album. There isn't a lot of introspection on his life, which is pretty fascinating. He goes way over the top on the cocaine raps, and it blurs who he really was, a 21 year old kid, in over his head. A lot of the more insightful tracks made the other album.

There's a vivid memory of me in 9th grade, listening to fukk These bytches and this girl takes my headphones and she's like oh I like this
she obviously liked me lol

There's an old track where Shyne, in graphic detail describes group sex with Mase, Harve Pierre, and Puff. He says Puff came in the room and no more p*ssy for us. It's wild. He has for sure seen some shyt.

Part of it, was just the climate. This was late 1997. Early 1998. It was like the gold rush. Shyne didn't turn out like a superstar, but they were going to make him one. That pipeline of hood rappers from Brooklyn, Queens, Harlem, was making millionaires all over Midtown C Suites.
