They publish outrageously bad op eds from time to time, it's part of their ideology of journalism. I think it may be an editorial mistake to run this now, while flames are still smoldering, but that's probably why they did. The Opinion section is separate from the paper. People make too much of these kinds of things, and turn it into "paper is supporting fascism"
The post above yours says otherwise...

You really enjoy making excuses for abhorrent behavior. The Opinion section is part of the paper and represents The New York Times. Saying otherwise is disingenuously ignorant. Allowing Tom Cotton's Drudge Report editorial onto their site isn't just poor judgment, it's promoting out right fascism.

I'm not say thing I think it's right, or the right call, just this is how these people who are incredibly devoted to free press and journalism think, sometimes it goes too far. Calling a paper fascist and condemning it entirely for this is just not accurate. It's good to see the writers, like Dargis, pushing back. Maybe they'll pull it. You really think the editor of the Opinion page is a secret fascist and this is what he wanted to promote? These people have their own extremities on topics like freedom of the press and real journalism, it gives them blind spots.

Now, is the collateral damage of this too high? Probably, I'll support pulling it and an apology, but I'm not going to not read the NY Times because of an op ed.

This isn’t a time to time thing. NY Times has never been on the side of the people.

they historically have terrible takes

What does it mean for a paper/news organization to be "on the side of people"? That's just not what they do. They are probably the best news organization in the world, but no, they don't summarily represent the "will of the people". Why would we want them to? They also are elitist and privileged, and very New York, and do a lot of great stories, on all kinds of issues.

I never said "will of the people," you did.

What I said is they are not on the side of the people and have never been, which is what the rest of your post said

just this is how these people who are incredibly devoted to free press and journalism think
Except they don't practice this either.

Sorry for misquoting you, (I feel you can use the phrase interchangeably,) I doubt we see any consensus here, I just don't understand why someone would A)dislike the NY Times for not being "on the side of the people", and B) think that's important, above all else, when it comes to a new organization? Invariably there will be issues at any news organization of this size, and smaller, I just don't think it's reasonable to throw out the entire thing.
