the virus isn't airborne, theres mythology to TWD. much like the romero zombies, it's believed to be religious. something a long the lines of hell overflowing with the dead, so the dead now walks the earth.

as for your question, it's the bite. it's the lethal bite of a dead person with god knows what kind of bacteria floating in their mouth. in this universe, you can save yourself if you amputate the entire limb immediately -- like within the minute. otherwise, you're screwed.

That's why I liked the whole subplot of Dr.Jenner and the CDC and that the show tried to interject some science into the outbreak. Especially the part where Jenner shows the group TS-19 and video of how the virus works and reanimates the brain. I have no problem with the outbreak being religious I just hate how most of the movies (except the OG Day Of The Dead) seem to accept it's "God Will's" and move on and just survive.

doesn't bother me, i hate when they add cures to the zombie bites -- e.g resident evil.

you gotta admit that if this shyt really happened. unless a cure was found immediately. it'd probably deteriorate down to survival pretty quick.
