i wouldn't say star wars is for kids because most of these Hero's and people in general are going to have horrible or sad deaths. If people want realism or mature tho read the books/comics...They don't hold back. The darkest the movie franchise has gone was Anakin trilogy and rogue one. If i remember correctly his mom was raped in episode 2 movie and we know the death toll of revenge of the sith. Everyone died in rogue one.
Disney just playing it safe right now after the solo movie bombed, and scraped everything else after the final ren trilogy
I'm going off what George Lucas said a long time ago. He was asked about the criticism of the first prequel and how Anakin was too young and cute acting/looking.. How jar jar was a silly character
He came right out like "these are kids movies you idiots." He would double down on those words in 2017, long after he sold the franchise... He's not talking about the books and extended universe. His OG 3 movies and the 3 prequels, in his mind and how he wrote them, were for middle schoolers. Why you think they cuttin each other and shooting with no blood, no gruesome death, and all these cute animal like aliens to play sidekick (ewoks, jar jar people, wookie's, the jackers/junk sellers). Yea, like a spongebob, we can see the adult themes... But the man wasn't writing it for us and most of us fell in love as kids
Star Wars creator George Lucas took the stage at
Star Wars Celebration today to
remind people that
the series has always been for children.
Lucas told actor Warwick Davis, who was moderating the event’s opening panel,
that Star Wars was always intended to be enjoyed by “12-year-olds.” He went on to admonish critics for “being mean” and talk about what Star Wars stands for in his mind.
“Friendships, honestly, trust, doing the right thing, living on the right side and avoiding the dark side,” Lucas said. “Those are the things it was meant to do.”
Lucas said that while certain fans and critics can be overly critical of the movies — with the prequel trilogy garnering overwhelmingly negative attention in particular — seeing children enjoy the movies that he’s created is a reminder of why he started to begin with.
Lucas brought up a memory from shooting a scene from one of the prequel movies in Spain, and seeing the “thousands” of Star Wars fans line up to meet him.
“There were all these tiny kids,” Lucas said. “They were all reaching their hands out, and they had no idea what was happening, but all they wanted to do was touch my hand.
“That’s all I’ve ever wanted, and it reminds me why I continue to do it.”
Star Wars Celebration runs today through April 16. Polygon will have ongoing coverage all weekend.
