I was talking about this with my boy. As a black person in Canada, how “Canadian” do you actually feel? Do you feel that your blackness and everything that means fits into Canadian values? The image of being a Canadian? I don’t know about you but I can’t say I feel Canadian in the way white Canadians feel Canadian. I can’t identify with this country and culture like that. I assume the same is true for a lot of NBA athletes from this country which may contribute to why they didn’t show up to play. Just a thought I had.
DO Black americans feel american like White Americans do ? Do African Americans blackness fit into white american society ?
AA were enslaved in a country for 500 years and yet there NBA descendants still play for Team USA...
My opinion is because the program is treated like a 2nd class citizen in this country,if it were treated top notch with top notch funding players would be more willing...
Nah I’m sure that Black Americans don’t feel like white Americans but I’m sure they still feel American. There’s a distinct Black American culture that is a huge part of American culture. In Canada, for all its “diversity is our strength” nonsense, Canada doesn’t integrate or give visibility to Black folks. Much different history. Being around a lot of Black Americans those motherfukkers are PROUD to be American. You don’t see too many Black folks in Canada with that patriotism toward Canada except for Black folks who grow up in rural mostly white places. The man dem mostly shout out where their parents are from etc etc.
But your point about our program being second rate is a great point as well. I think the program is trying to go in a different direction and earn some respect among our own athletes.
