I seriously doubt Turkey anticipated that the army would collapse and they’d march on Damascus barely opposed. Their attempts at reconciling with Assad just the past few months strongly suggest that.
Turkey initiated the advance because they knew Hezbollah is in disarray and Russia cannot not drop enough bombs to stop the advance.
I'm sure the level of territories taken has surprised everyone.

This was reported elsewhere earlier. The key detail was that they were hoping the operation would create an umbrella around Aleppo, where some refugees could return, and to increase their leverage in negotiations with Assad and Trump.

Events overtook their aims and at this stage, the main rebel group is making decisions and statements that suggest they’ve gained more autonomy (I.e. statements that they want to respect Kurds autonomy)

That's all she wrote for him.

Been in office almost 25 years, Putin has always been able to be around to help him but not this time cause Russia got bigger problems on their hand and know he isn't worth fighting for. His own people turned against him so what can he do, nobody else is around to help him.

He thought people forgot him with the other European wars but evil deeds are never forgotten. From the moment he poisoned his own people he was always going to meet his own devastating(for him) end

At this point it’s early enough to talk about Post Assad reality. Rebels who’ve gotten to Damascus are not HTS and are supported by different foreign states. What happens when HTS gets to Damascus soon after will say a whole lot about what post Assad Syria will look like.
