Why do they keep thinking they can just roll up on Lucifer and just kill him like a common monster?

Is it just me or were angels portrayed more powerful, smarter and with more abilities back when they first debut on this show back during season 4 compared to the weakling angels of these past couple and current seasons?

Probably because they don't want to compete with the Olympics for ratings but they did set up a lot of stuff to look forward to when they come back:another break

Gabriel is a trickster.... Lucifer may have killed a clone and he layed low until Aseomadus found him

They still are. It's just that the tools Sam and Dean has have gotten as strong as the enemies they are facing.
It's not just that, none of these angels are sticking out like they did in the past. They are all followers than leaders and rogue angels like they dealt with in the past. Angels like Balthazar and Bartheleomew stood out more than these current bunch of sorry ass angels

Looking back on Gabriel being "killed" by Lucifer many many many seasons ago...
That looks like a regular angel blade that Lucifer "killed" Gabriel with not an archangel blade. I can imagine they will reveal that Gabriel faked his death and gave that porno dvd to the Winchesters explaining how to lock Lucifer up then decided to lay low to avoid dealing with his family.... but somehow Asmodaus found him.
