Nah. They made Gwen geeky and an outcast. MJ was still MJ just a younger version of her. Gwen was always smart but she was never an outcast and was never not the popular chick. But that's what you can do with characters who only been established as college aged people. Once you go back to high school you extrapolate what they may have been like.
In ultimate spider man (the comic not that awful show) they made MJ more of the social outcast type who only had two friends, Harry and Pete

Yup. And a journalist. She wasn't hideous or anything but they made her character more of who MJ became at that time rather than how she was in the 60s
