Another Gold Medal
Just watched the Hitchins fight and that was a damn robbery. Round 1 was a dominating performance for Hitchins. Judges have Russell round 1 was a disgrace. Even the Brazilian crowd was chanting Haiti. Russell got like 8 warnings with no deductions. You neggas gotta see that fight to underatnd the robbery. Straight robbery.

Day seven of the boxing in Rio is off and running, and we’ve got one gold medal match set!

Note: The NBC stream was a mess during the women’s fights to open the morning, which is why there’s a lack of detail for these fights.

Women’s flyweight (51kg) - Round of 16
  • Tetyana Kob (Ukraine) def. Stanimira Petrova (Bulgaria)
  • Mandy Bujold (Canada) def. Yodgoroy Mirzaeva (Uzbekistan)
Kob will take on Nicola Adams, the top seed from Great Britain and 2012 gold medalist. Bujold will face Cancan Ren of China.

Women’s lightweight (60kg) - Round of 16
  • Mira Potkonen (Finland) def. Adriana Araújo (Brazil)
  • Junhua Yin (China) def. Hasnaa Lachgar (Morocco)
Potkonen now faces top seed and 2012 gold medalist Katie Taylor of Ireland, and Yin moves on to face Azerbaijan’s Yana Alekseevna of Azerbaijan.

Men’s light flyweight (49kg) - Semifinals
  • Yurberjen Martinez (Colombia) def. Joahyns Argilagos (Cuba)
  • Hasanboy Dusmatov (Uzbekistan) def. Nico Hernandez (United States)
More on these fights here.

Men’s lightweight (60kg) - Quarterfinals
Lázaro Álvarez (Cuba) def. Carlos Balderas (United States)

Back-to-back losses for a couple of good American stories from Rio, and neither fighter has a thing to be ashamed of, as they both lost to world class fighters, and gave a great effort in defeat. Balderas has the look of a pro prospect, and you can bet every American promoter will be in touch with him soon enough. Álvarez advances on, and is guaranteed at least a bronze

Robson Conceiçāo (Brazil) def. Hurshid Tojibaev (Uzbekistan)

Of the Brazilian fighters in Rio, Conceiçāo is the best, and is also guaranteed at least a bronze now. He reportedly plans to turn pro after this. He’s 27, but there’s still some good years left, and he’s got a legitimate chance to beat Álvarez in the semifinal, too. Being at home won’t hurt, either.

Men’s middleweight (75kg) - Round of 16
Arlen López (Cuba) def. Zoltán Harcsa (Hungary)

This was a massive KO, the truest pure knockout we’ve seen in Rio thus far, coming just before the end of the first round. There’s a reason López is the gold medal favorite, and we saw it here.

Christian Mbilli (France) def. Marlo Delgado (Ecuador)

A really tough fight here, but Mbilli deserved the win, which was a split decision, 2-1 on each card, two for Mbilli, one for Delgado. He’s got a date in the quarterfinal with López now, which looks positively frightening after today, but Mbilli is a sturdy, strong guy, so it could be interesting.

Zhanilek Alimkhanuly (Kazakhstan) def. Ilyas Abbadi (Algeria)

Alimkhanuly dominated Great Britain’s Anthony Fowler in the round of 32, and did pretty much the same to Ilyas Abbadi of Algeria in this fight. He’s a very good, very smart fighter, physically quite strong, and looks like a serious contender so far.

Day seven in Rio is complete! Here’s what we saw in the evening session today.

Women’s flyweight (51kg) - Round of 16
Ingrid Valencia (Colombia) def. Judith Mbougnade (Central African Republic)

Total mismatch, if we’re being honest. Mbougnade, 18, received a tripartite invite, and, well, it showed. Valencia dominated the first, then dominated the second, and then dominated into the third, with eight counts in both of the latter two rounds, before the referee made the right decision to call it off. Mbougnade fought hard, but it was a very game novice against a very well-schooled fighter.

Sarah Ourahmoune (France) def. Zohra Ez Zahraoui (Morocco)

Not quite the mismatch of the first fight, but not competitive, either. Ez Zahraoui was taller, but Ourahmoune was the much more polished fighter, and won a four-round shutout decision.

Women’s middleweight (60kg) - Round of 16
Mikaela Mayer (United States) def. Jennifer Chieng (Micronesia)

Another fairly dull fight, in that there wasn’t much competition. Chieng gave it a go, but was outclassed by Mayer.

Irma Testa (Italy) def. Shelley Watts (Australia)

The best of the evening women’s fights, but still a clear win for Testa, no real debate about it.

Men’s lightweight (60kg) - Quarterfinals
Otgondalai Dorjnyambuu (Mongolia) def. Reda Benbaziz (Algeria)

Benbaziz has shown a good amount of talent in the Olympics, but Otgondalai was just a level too high for him, a crafty, rugged fighter, kept himself on top of things here, never really let Benbaziz get into it. Otgondalai is now guaranteed at least a bronze.

Sofiane Oumiha (France) def. Albert Selimov (Azerbaijan)

Oumiha continues a terrific run in Rio and is now guaranteed at least a bronze medal. Here, he made veteran Selimov look, well, kind of old, with a really impressive precision sort of performance. He just beat Selimov thoroughly, was better in every way.

Men’s middleweight (75kg) - Round of 16
Kamran Shakhsuvarly (Azerbaijan) def. Artem Chebotarev (Russia)

Miserable fight, awful tactics from Shakhsuvarly, who held and held and held and was warned and warned and warned, but no points were taken. Points should have been taken. Anyway, he advances to the quarterfinals.

Misael Rodríguez (México) def. Michael O’Reilly (Ireland)

This was a walkover. O’Reilly failed a drug test and was disqualified. Commentary was hilarious. "Michael O’Reilly was unable to make himself available. A disappointment for O’Reilly." They just completely avoided saying why Michael O’Reilly couldn’t fight. Oh well!

Hosam Abdin (Egypt) def. Wilfried Ntsengue (Cameroon)

Another fairly dull fight. Honestly, the middleweights have been my least favorite division thus far. This was pretty dominant stuff from Abdin, who moves on to face Rodríguez of México.

Krishan Vikas (India) def. Önder Sipal (Turkey)

A better fight than the first two, at least. Sipal gave this everythinghe had, but Vikas controlled things and got the win, and now moves on to the quarterfinal.

Bektemier Melikuziev (Uzbekistan) def. Daniel Lewis (Australia)

A pretty thorough performance here from the No. 2 seed, and to me, he and top seed Arlen López of Cuba have both looked ahead of the field at this weight, but you never know what we’ll see going forward, either.
