Sounds like you need to be blunt; you don't have to be an a$$hole, but I'd just say "Meeting friends and going to your church isn't what this relationship is about; you aren't my girl" (in so many words). Maybe I'm just a blunt person, but I generally don't have time to beat around the bush. I don't try to deliberately hurt people's feelings, but I will tell them the truth; that way, they can't get shyt misconstrued.
yeah it is kinda hard being mean to people after returning from afghanistan
