February isn’t pulling any punches, but we’re getting through it thanks to the Benzocaine-like powers of Netflix’s streaming video service. Plus, March is around the corner and bringing new seasons of action-packed shows, similarly action-packed films, and some original content in the form of illuminating documentaries. While you’re admiring the list of new additions, be sure to check the list of everything leaving Netflix this March, if only to do some belated enjoying of a few Christmas movies.
The Highlights
Did you love President Barack Obama’s appearance on the Netflix original My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman? Then you’ll probably get a lot out of Letterman’s next guest, Malala Yousafzai (watch it March 9).
Netflix’s original documentaries are taking aim at some of the issues facing the American people, like public health and addiction. Flint Town, premiering March 2, follows officers in Flint, Michigan as they deal with the effects of poverty, lack of vital resources, and the relationship between law enforcement and the residents of Flint. If you’re looking for something equally unsettling, the documentary Take Your Pills, discussing the rise of prescription drug use in the United States, is also up for viewing on March 16.
Fans of more lighthearted shows need not fret. The fifth season of Voltron: The Legendary Defender will be available on March 2, as will Netflix’s new baking show Nailed It hosted by comedian and director Nicole Byer along with chocolatier Jacques Torres. If you love failed attempts at artfully crafting pastries, cakes, and other delights, this comedic culinary extravaganza is up your alley.
As for what’s leaving the service in March, Tim Allen stans may be sad to hear all three of Disney’s The Santa Clause films are departing March 12 (woe is me), and all seven seasons of FX’s Archer are leaving March 14 (wait, now I’m actually upset). You can also say goodbye to classic films like Jaws, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zizzou, and everyone’s favorite rom-com, Hitch.

A new Netflix show wants to manipulate people into committing murder
At any given moment, how close are any of us to committing an act as despicable as murder? What kind of circumstances could arise to push a person in that direction?
Those are questions The Push sets out to ask. The upcoming Netflix reality special stages an elaborate ruse in which a series of scripted events drive one unsuspecting man toward killing a living human.
A new trailer for the hour-long program, out Feb. 27, hints at the premise. There's a big-money auction happening, and one of the event's wealthy benefactors falls to the ground clutching his chest shortly before it begins.
Chris, the unwitting "star" of the program, is one of two participants who's there when it happens. He's subsequently drawn into a "web of lies" as the show's 70 actors lead him toward participating in what the trailer suggests is a staged suicide.
The whole thing is a setup, of course, but Chris doesn't know that. The Push is the work of Derren Brown, a British mentalist whom Netflix describes as a "psychological illusionist." The reality special, an "audacious social experiment" is a consideration of how both authority figures and social pressures can manipulate an otherwise ordinary person in extraordinary ways.
The Push isn't actually a new release. It's one of two older Brown specials that originally aired in the United Kingdom and which Netflix has now picked up for re-release (the other is called The Miracle). Brown is also working on something completely new for the streaming giant, but no details have been released yet.
